Are things really that bad at Halfords?

Could be worse, could take a lady home and find she has blue waffle

Best of luck though, with work that is, not finding a lady with blue waffle.

It's not the end of the world is it, hardly setting the world alight are they! It is probably a blessing in disguise as you could easily become too comfy in what is a stale market. I would treat this as a launching pad for better things.

peterzs 19-03-10 11:07 AM

Best of luck, hope it all works out OK.

I'll second that. When I lost my job with Chevron Oil in 2006 I thought my world had ended - when actually it was the best thing that could have happened and I ended up with a better job out of it!

If you've got other jobs to fall back on sounds like either way you will have it sorted mate :)

How did you like the industry & working at Chevron?

I have been considering going into BP to do Procurement after uni.

g8ndj 19-03-10 01:18 PM

Are Halfords in the s**t then? I know they were a few years back but i've heard recently they've just bought out Nationwide Autocentres and going to turn them into Halfords fast fit centres for batteries, wiper blades, tyres, exhausts, brakes, e.t.c

out of all the companies I've worked for Chevron were probably the best in terms of freebies and training oppertunities, but the clawback (days you have to work extra before you get paid any extra - mine was 16 days!) was a pain. I spent a week in Norway on a training course and didn't get paid for it - but made sure I partied hard every night on the company credit card :happy2:

BP are really good if you end up on the right platfrom. I've been on 3 now and they've all been great, but I'd never work for them onshore.

I'm with Shell now and I can't say I like it much. They never spend money on anything non-production related, I'm constantly doing extra time without overtime - or even a thank you from the powers that be

It's gets you out to see the world though. I've got some amazing party stories out of it all

peterzs 19-03-10 10:14 PM

One of the things they should have said, is that you are allowed time off to go for interviews/job seeking etc. without them deducting it as holidays, or saying you have to make the time up.

Just give them notice when you want to go.

As they say, one door closes, another one opens.

If he knows others are being made redundant surley the right thing to do is to let them know now, not in 2 weeks, even better would be to offer to take redundance, then he'd get some money and still leave.
