car passed mot....

today and while the had it i asked them to check wher the slight oil leak is coming from they called me and said it looks like its coming from the corner of the head but the car is holding its water and never over heated.... any advice ion what to do

stamford 29-01-13 02:27 PM

I would guess more cam cover then head otherwise there would be more issues other than oil.

peterzs 29-01-13 02:28 PM

Keep on checking the oil levels!!!!

Sounds expensive to strip it down, if it is just a cam cover gasket.

Is it just a weep, or do you get a pool of oil????

shaunyd 29-01-13 02:34 PM

slight drips only notice it when it wet on the ground

shaunyd 29-01-13 02:35 PM

head was done this time last year with a reconed head 2

peterzs 29-01-13 02:45 PM

Might be worth a sniff test, just to make sure its not a head gasket problem.

Or a pressure test, will the guy that did the original work, have a look to check its nothing he did???

shaunyd 29-01-13 02:53 PM

its the garage that told me that did the head last year im not happy at all at the moment

shaunyd 29-01-13 03:15 PM

just had a look under the bonnet and in no way am i mechanical but ther looks to be oil on top of the exhaust mani fold and across the lip their

peterzs 29-01-13 03:16 PM

1.6 K series not sure on oil leaks, from pipes etc.

Might be worth PM'ing Zred or one of the Head Gasket guys, like Rover Solutions, Russell. Might be able to point you to a known weakness.

shaunyd 29-01-13 05:15 PM

on a plus side the car passed its mot 4th time running no advisorys apart from no washers on head lights for my hid's

talkingcars 29-01-13 05:38 PM

Any chance of a photo of the engine bay to show the leak?

It isn't unusual to reuse the cam cover gasket as it can keep cost down although best practice is to replace.

Congratulations on the pass.

shaunyd 29-01-13 05:52 PM

ill take one in the morning tc i did think that just seems so strange that none of the other symptoms aint their

Ritchy 29-01-13 06:19 PM

If its dripping onto the exhaust maifold nore likely cam seals, cam ladder, or cam cover. Exhaust manifold is above head level

shaunyd 29-01-13 06:28 PM

thats what i was thinking mate its doing my head in ill take a picture in the morning and see if you guys can shed any light on it

shaunyd 30-01-13 10:33 AM

the second pic is wher the oil seems to be sittitng whent back to the garage and they just said maybe a oil seal???

petet16 30-01-13 10:38 AM

Cam cover seal I would say, there is an outside chance it could be a cam seal but I doubt it.
At least the cover seal is an easy fix

talkingcars 30-01-13 11:37 AM

to make sure wipe the oil off, should be able to see where it's coming from.

buchan4042 09-02-13 09:43 PM

looks like the rocker cover gasket does it not? mine's a 1.6 hatch and was like that when i bought it, new gasket £14 and gasket sealer £6 and its all fixed

shaunyd 09-02-13 09:52 PM

I hope so gonna try that 1st as a cheap fix
