182 va va voom!
A year has past and my membership has clocked over one year, I was going not to renew but for all it was, and the fact I quite like this wee place and decided to carry on :beer2:
So a year has past and although I had the Track Zed for only 10months, I had been one of the best cars I had, great fun and done on a budget. I do miss it but it was a joint adventure and the timing was right. That brings me to this, a Renault Clio 182 - the new road legal trackday toy! plan on doing a small up to date build thread on this, nothing like I had done before, not as picture crazy haha! been on cliosport.net, good site and loads of info but you need to go hunting as there is a few now and again more interested in shooting each other down and not so helpful. anyway.... the Clio, I decided the engine bay needed a freshening up Before: (note not actual engine bay but looking identical) http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps4ab06335.png done a bit of stripping  http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psf03bf0f4.jpg End result: http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psec7a3010.jpg This Sunday is yet again another Knockhill day and if the weather is good, was going to take the clio a blast round the track, and with wanting to do a few improvements such as coilovers, full stainless, dropping to 15", and looking into a possible set of cam, I got one of the jobs done at the weekend there, http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psc4213d26.jpg new SS exhaust system fitted, as the old one was getting a bit tatty, and was the original system, so well overdue being replaced. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps0e660dc9.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psa77665f5.jpg as for other repairs, I have had new driveshafts fitted due to not being able to source an ABS ring as they are not standard, decided I wanted new pads and disks all round, so full miltex drilled, grooved and vented. replaced the rear suspension as it was sitting odd as it had standard clio dampers, got a good 2nd hand pair of ebay and cured that, so yeah not of to a flyer with it, but now that they are done its (hopefully) one less thing to worry about. on a separate note, its got a lot of fun factor about it, but if I'm honest, I'm sure the Track Zed felt of more quality.... French Eh! |
Engine bay looks really good, nice job. Not a bad car considering it is French! ;)
|
Looking good.
Daughter has a Initiale, nippy little car. Looking forward to the Track pics!! |
Daughter just sold her mint phase 1 172 sport. Got a Mk4 GSi Astra now.
Watch out for cam belt changes and the Aux belt tensioner problems. OR have they sorted this on the newer versions? |
Dont take offense but isnt this a step back from a zs??
|
We were talking about the belts yesterday, anywhere cheap that do them.
Tried the Rentech, near us and they wanted a arm and a leg. Any mobile guys that you know of TCB??? For the Bournemouth area.:whistle::whistle: |
Quote:
The belts have all been done 15-20k ago but they still have the issue of a noisy dephaser pully which works the variable valve timing. Common fault and makes it sound a little like a tractor. |
Great improvement under the bonnet. Good work.
Great little cars and where I have no doubt it's lighter than a ZS with the same power, I'd reckon more fun on the track. Nice one. |

Update after Knockhill antics:-
so had my first session out in the clio at Knockhill on Sunday there, and over all I'm very happy with it. Drove the the car up in the morning following my mates 600bhp Evo lasted the full day and drove home with no major issues. One problem I did have is my exhaust has moved slightly and touched and melted the bumper a little, nothin major. As for for the track day... For a standard car it preformed well passing a 182 throphy and another 172 clio, taking a few redtop nova's, BMW 328i, mx5's saxo's and older type civics. ... Had a good wee fight with a mx5 supercharged, the more upto date civic type R's and even met old yellow peril on the day... so happy with the end result. A wee picture of it sitting in the paddock http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps825b7f7c.jpg Lots of 3 wheeled action was going on and felt more confident on the corners with it. Only issue I now have with the car, Is that I took the car out after being out on Sunday and it's died on me, after further checking I've found the positive going to the starter had shorted agenst the exhaust manifold and blown the fuse that's on the positive lead coming from the battery. It's not a normal fuse as you can see http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb5629f9a.jpg Trying to find the rating of this fuse is turning out to be a bit of a mission, Renault don't have a clue as it's not a new upto date car that they are interested in and the cliosport site just ain't technical enough.. So as it stands the now, the car doesn't run, but once this fuse is replaced we should be back up and running and continue to what was a good start :) |
update time:
been busy buying plenty of bits and bobs, and being a Renault there is always something needing fixed. so since having a blast in October with it round the track, decided to improve handling first and foremost as it went quick enough, just felt I could always get better at cornering. so new ball joint, track rod ends, and as it had a leaking steering rack (common fault) all got replaced. a few picture as always http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps1e10d02e.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb75ad944.jpg sourced 2nd hand for £35 delivered and in good condition, terrible picture... On Saturday all the above had been fitted, and today arrived these!.. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psc5521fd9.jpg K-tec Coilovers. hopefully get these fitted this weekend and then I can get it tracked and be happy with that. I was going to get GAZ coilovers off ZRED but these came up and a good price so couldnt pass them by otherwise it would have been a set of GAZ's and ZRED was doing one of the better prices. so to go along with the new suspension setup is a set of 15" alloys complete with marangoni track day tyres http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps25f1556c.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psf8e926a0.jpg and to finish off with the picture new replaced steering wheel, as the original one was badly worn http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psf1d9deec.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psa304fe17.jpg cant forget the stainless towing eye aswell haha http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps2012d187.jpg also go a Skoda fabia front splitter to fit to the front bumper, and in the pipe line over on clio-sport there is a group buy going for a set of these, this is the prototype on a trial car but it looks good .. I think so anyway :) http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps2bed8bec.jpg |
Been busy, have to let us know how it feels out on track.
:clap::clap::clap: |
Sorry Pete only just saw your request? No one mobile that I know. She did have the aux belt tensioner go and we took it to local independent called French Connection or French Auto Solutions I think. Engine had to be lifted to do this even. They are crap to do work on and electrics are horrendous too. Sorry but zs is a far better car.
|
Cheers TCB, tend to agree, daughter popped over with self firing windscreen wipers. They would start up on their own and then park in the middle of the screen.
Got the trusty WD40 out and sprayed that around. Turned out she had used a Jet Wash on it, I reckon it got water into the electronics somewhere. I went to a Renault Garage and after much sucking in of cheeks, "has it got a rain sensor", lots of head shaking. That could be expensive he said. Anyway, used my trusted method, do nothing and let it all dry out. And its sorted itself out. Think she will have to take it to Renteq, for the belts, least they know what they are doing.:yes::yes: |
As a daily runner and everyday type of car.. I'd agree the ZS or even ZR as I've had one of them as well is a better car, better build and so on. And the electrics are a bit mental.. If only the could keep it simple.

update:
not really been on here for a while, not really been on-line much if anything. I'll start of with saying ''I wish I kept the Zed'' haha best way to describe this as a uphill battle.. do one thing and another goes wrong, textbook French. so after buying they coilovers shown a few posts before, it turned out that clio sports have three different suspension set-ups and none are interchangeable with out hubs being changed and so on... they coilovers where for a standard clio 172/182 my clio is a (Full Fat version) as they call it cup pack suspension fitted... which has uprated larger hubs, uprated cup dampers and a few others, meaning all bolt spaces etc dont line up. the 3rd version is called trophy suspension which is the same as the full fat but with adjustable dampness on the dampers and differnt fittings again on the front.... they 3 are all completely separate from all the 1.2's and other models. madness! so after deciding what to do for suspension, considering I have uprated dampers already I settled for a set of Eibach springs (recommend to be the better spring available) http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psckbgfdyf.jpg no real change on driving feel, but lowers by about 30mm next hassle was while getting them fitted I decided to get a set of uprated top mounts to go with the springs to stiffing the front right up. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...pswnit7mer.jpg looked the part but even with making spacers up they knocked something awful so got shot of them and went for new standard one. next issue is the steering wheel! it has a steering angle position sensor which I can not get to stay off, even with the correct boss fitted to suit the sparco wheel (the sensor fits a gap in the boss and follows the wheel) and results in disabling the traction control putting up the service light and abs... managed to get abs light to stay off but still have the service and traction control on... but it turn the traction control off for the track so happy to leave it at that. during this process due to taking the wheel on n off constant I shorted the horn out and melted that haha! I'll take the blame for that.. but on a brighter note, it now has had a full suspension refresh and is ready to run on the 26th if the weather is any good, think am going to give it a proper caning to make up for the hassles haha! |
alrite guys
had my 2nd Knockhill day on Sunday there (26th January) proper awful day weather wise, cleared a little but good fun never the less :) think I have converted the guy who bought my yellow ZS so much that he was up with that and also another red 180 saloon. good on him, got a video from a redtop corsa chasing me while I chase and split the two Zed's in the clio http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xTUG4ZQyNg The two MG where going well all day, yellow was going quicker than the red one, but by the end of the day I was talking to him and he said he's lost 2nd gear in the yellow one so chances are its a new box... only thing to go wrong with it after over a years worth of racing by myself and from what he has done, he had took it to crail aswell so plenty of use. few clips if interested, most are from the car behind a redtop corsa. this one I lose the back end going on to the back straight before the hairpin, was trying a little to hard chasing the type R, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4ZklTwklyk - come in about the 2min 25sec mark this one I let him by after a few laps was later in the day, but at the end of the video I think he counts this as one to the corsa haha http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH_P_xg-8X8 a few pictures from the guy on the side http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...pshjuysxka.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psotq9jzpc.png http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...pspbg7uavl.png these are from my camera not great racing but more showing the conditions warming up laps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt5Pw...ature=youtu.be will upload more but taking ages.. |
Some good vids, awful conditions, braver than me!!!
Have to get your high vis brake light working! Good to see the Yellow ZS still going strong. Cheers for posting up.:wave::wave: |
little update:
today I was fitting my new go faster parts :D. Had a issue when on the track where it went into safe mode, and long story short it turns out to be the throttle body sensor. its a built in unit so new throttle body was needed. could have went standard but found a guy down Sussex, and after talking to him and checking out his work (has a clio project himself) decided to get a machined and enlarged one from 60mm to 65mm along with a machined and enlarged lower inlet manifold. the claim is an extra 10bhp +17ftlb and all for under £200 a few New Vs old picture http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...pse8d5a13f.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psbyemr45h.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psawjws6xv.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...pslqvjcnzk.jpg just awaiting a new inlet gasket as shown.. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psj4dgdf3t.jpg looking foward to see how it runs now. on a off note, been considering turning this 100% track and getting a run around to go shopping etc, and been considering a return to the ZS.... since they are going for buttons, if anything getting cheaper  |
That's ok for 200 notes.

Crackin thread this Cally loads of good pics and video, look's like your putting a few quid into the Trackdays now and car look like it goes like the clappers
Weather looks stinking at Knockhill and don't imagine it to be too much fun in the wet Good to see the yellow 180 still running, guy who has it put this video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_WptabtJPo Im gonna do another track day this year but will wait till Sun shines. |

cheers mate, I was going to either keep the ZS and do a few more mods to it or move on, and I got the clio but the ZS is quicker in the last third of the straights than me if he gets out the corner quick enough. the ZS can happily hold a clio 172/182 out but will never pass it.. I don't mind putting a few quid in to it, I'm not one of these people who look at the value of the car and think its not worth another adding too.. If I like it I do it :) just not decided where I want to take this one now. he has a couple of video's from previous times, he originally wanted the ZS as a part time track car until he got better, but now he is running two 180's as you seen in that video. he did take a fiat coupe turbo and blew that up last time. proper converted to a MG man haha! let us know next time your up, and maybe even smokey might bring the site car back from the dead by then... maybe haha |
little update as usual after a knockhill day out :smile1:
not a great day, little better weather wise than January but still not very Bonnie! Decided to run with my 15's and semi slicks, wishing I never if anything, the car just did not grip atoll all day, got a good video of me getting the car proper side ways, before later having it step out and the clio done a dance :w00t: well on Monday there I put car in for its MOT, nice and early as I knew I might need a bush or two.. outcome, anti roll bar bushes done and rear axle bushes also gone what I didn't expect. Also failed on a horn that didnt work but I'll take the blame for that as I melted it haha! :pirate2: as always, I love a pic happy post http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps5satpkzl.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps3q2cqjqm.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psufy31bkt.png http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psog6ww1h8.png http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psv7fpabmi.png http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psiz92byvg.png http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...pshcpmp3r2.png http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps26rob0ip.png One of the boys from cliosport.net had made the trip from Newcastle for the day, brave considering the distance to get home! http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psuzcw7s2w.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...pscg3ziqf5.jpg also my bro took his saxo up which ran well on the day http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psuotbhjrh.jpg there was two blue MG ZS 180's out on track aswell, they looked to have a good day as they seemed to be with each other. video's from the day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NNHo4Or6PU - lots of sliding and a spin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpZGt_MTf5Y - mini in front spins ZS in clip aswell. then let a MX5 by but ends up being too slow. |
Oh hello!
|
which tyres were you running, i always used toyo 888 on wet track and they were amazing, only time they were no good was standing water.
Hows the car run with the new engine parts ...any quicker? |
Quote:
It was a deal I got for tyres and alloys off someone on the cliosport forum otherwise I would have went for R888 the tyre of choice plus they have about 2-3 track days left in them. I ran last month on 16's and road tyres and had much more grip. Upgrade wise it was hard to tell due to not being able to give it as much as I would have liked to. I defo think there is a smother delivery and had another 182 chase me and felt as if I was pulling on the straights. Hopefully this weekend it'll be all poly bushed and also uprated engine mounts getting fitted. With that and better conditions should start seeing a difference. |
Overdue update!
not really been on here as such, apart from have a quick look at things. Had a Knockhill day there on Sunday there (18th) and for a change had a good dry day and not a drop of rain to be seen! It was also a Ford Live day so a few old and more new RS's and cossy's on show. the clio since I was last here has came on a little bit, along with getting new timing belt it has also had the proper aircon delete kit fitted and after weighing the aircon pump, rear wiper motor plus a weight sat in the front, a total of 10.5kg! most of that off the front aswell. I also has a race spec engine mount, been poly bushed, few new pipes n odd parts here n there the clio is running a performing a lot better. was catching up on a clio 197 on the straights, maybe he was laying off early but he was never passing me as such. also the Yellow MG lives on, kinda! it lost 2nd gear so new box needed, was talking to the guy as he had His red ZS up and he said he's got it all ready to be done. was out in the red one with him, defo something about that yellow one, red is just not as quick haha. the next thing to do to the clio is fit is its new flywheel and clutch, get a vibration sometimes thought the peddle, been told it could be the release bearing. so not just any flywheel getting fitted, but a lightweight one, almost half the weight of standard. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psjjdj3hrs.jpg few picture from the day :) http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...pswubhoryp.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psudxl7f7n.png http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psxmfaxwrv.png http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psrin240p9.png http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps8jg9dssm.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...pslmcgelgy.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps2m7cvaf5.jpg |
plus a few video's if any one wishes :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xABqI8DymL4 chasing my bro's saxo and he wouldn't let me by haha! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzaO4CRew6M 2 wheeled action in that one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMF7Er4Eshk always check tyre pressures! back end went light on me! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6_jfUP6aTY good chase with a quick orange civic |
on the first vid you overtook a zed,did you talk to him, seen it in falkirk, thats was livewire 1888s car/old one, know he was selling dunno if he still has it.

Not updated this in a while so will give it a quick going over..
cars done about 3 trackdays since last up date and its no longer a road going car as it was, (although its road legal still). car is fully stripped with now just one bucket and harness in it. many... actually loads of new parts fitted. fully polybushed now, front suspension, rear, even the steering racks been polybushed haha. talking about steering racks.. now onto my 3rd one, goes again this time I think I'll convert the car from hydraulic to electric steering. running on 15's now instead of 16's even started weighing things and found the 15's 4-5kg lighter per wheel!! due a new set of discs, they have lasted 6 knockhill's and a few trips here and there about. also running proper race pads up front. Mintex Racing. full race exhaust plus fully heat wrapped. and no doubt loads more.. still looks like a Clio the now and don't think I want to change that, maybe get a few stickers soon onto it ha! older pictures: http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps9af7d666.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psfa3a431a.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps38fb3834.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps8774285f.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps883d5388.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psa8sjsjc3.png 2nd outting but on what I call my wet wheels :) http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psu4vxpvb6.jpg http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psknlpm78l.jpg Most recent pics: http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/a...psg4etecm0.png |
