Sooo what about this diesel fuel then...

Unless you have been in a cave for the last... well 2 years really you will have seen that fuel is on the rise and at a alarming rate as well... its gone up 10p since my missis last filled up her punto!!!!
I'm sure most of you have felt the pinch and with the threat of it going to 130+ and also insurance premiums poss going up by 40% its all getting a bit tight.
Sooo instead of leaving the zs which I just cant seem to do (even the missis spotted that when she said 'why dont you get a alfa jtd or a veccy' and I looked like she had said 'can you just shoot your parents') Im looking to go zs td and I was after the td owners on here to point out the issues to look out for, mpg and the best sort of modds... would be looking at a mk1.

Dan1971 02-01-11 09:02 AM

Biggest problem you're gonna have is finding one !!!!

lawrence-zs180 02-01-11 09:09 AM

tell me about it lol.... there are a few but with what I have learn't with my 180 I'm alot more careful.. that was a massive learning curve.

haGGard 02-01-11 11:13 AM

I've also been thinking about this too. Adrian Flux want 1535 pounds off me in 2 weeks time just to insure the 180 again, then i need road tax on top of that, plus filling the thing is getting expensive!

However everytime i put my foot down and i hear the v6 past 3k rpm i get all confused!! Would love to keep it but im not sure i could manage!

Aye, the ZS is becoming even more difficult to run. If insurance prices go up again, Im either going to have to move to a better postcode or get a different car.

Im thinking move.

I can sympathise - cars are becoming very expensive commodities, especially when we don't use them to commute to work. Least we don't have as much to worry about with the petrol prices.

With mine, by far the single largest outlay is the insurance premium due to the truly horrific postcode (near the centre of Manchester...). I ransacked my savings to pay it off, suffice to say it is more than any premiums mentioned so far in this thread. I managed to pay it all off (to avoid the 10% direct debit charge) and am hoping to get some of the premium back when I move.

But increasing insurance costs, increasing fuel and still the doubt over whether the ZS180 will be included in the newer road tax scheme means that it is becoming ever more difficult to justify owning the car, which is a damn shame because its one of the few things that can bring a smile to my face at the minute.

Trying times, indeed.

peterzs 02-01-11 12:59 PM

Dervs go well with a few cheap mods, decat, BMC panel filter, push the boost up, remap, Ive got a MAFRAM box, dont know what it does but suppose to give better running, ss Powerflow exhaust. You can put in SDi injectors, and can then see 150 bhp + increase in torque, but at a cost to the mpg.

Was getting 50+ mpg but after playing around its more like 40+ but thats using the torque and smiling all the time.

Its a different way of driving, dont have to use all the revs, as they pull from 1500 up to 4500 most wierd after being used to max power at max revs.

Only probs I've had was the o/s/r brake stuck on chewing up disk, was rusted up.

Been round Brands as a novice and took it to Santa Pod, 134 bhp, Santa Pod 17.5 secs and 82 mph, not as fast as the 180, but tax is only ?125 a year and ins. is lowish.

I would get another one, are quick enough and can keep up with most cars.

Would you be interested in a Peugeot 205 gr taxed and mooted ?300 .....lol only joking I would have a dervish deisel but at the moment a 1.4 zr is on the plates as it's the only thing I can afford on insurance

lawrence-zs180 02-01-11 01:06 PM

im the other way mate... using it to much lol

p_b82 02-01-11 04:21 PM

Peter has already covered most the points; and you know of the trial and tribulations of going further on the build thread for me .....

Either way that said, the MAF sensor is the main weak point, roverron no longer does a MAF, but we can get pierburg replacements ow with the IAT for less than an OE Bosch MAF, .org has a few threads with cars that use the same sensor number, so you can just buy the new vauxuall or alfa housing and switch the maf into ours.

Other thing to go is the Intercooler hoses. it is not a case of if, but when. OE ones are about ?40 per pipe prob a bit more now that VAT is higher.

I think there is a thread that stamford wrote up from some info i gave him..... but really i would say ave a read of the derv section on .org (as i know you are on the forum anyways).

other than the engine itself all the same issues are there that would affect the 180, eg rust patches and blocked drains etc...

daytona365 02-01-11 07:24 PM

Id get to eating bread and cheese,,,,,,,,,,,,,stale bread and next doors old cheese before I gave up my 180. Its the only thing that keeps me sane. Student riots, immigrants, muslim bombers, football!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just make myself a cup of coffee and go for a drive......Better than beer and/or sex!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on, lets no get depressed, 2011 may be tight, but with a ZS in your fleet, nothing can be too bad. And we got the forum, so we all got friends.

I feel better already, wheres my car keys?:mml:

haGGard 02-01-11 07:42 PM

Yea im going to do everything i can think of to make some cut back and keep the 180 this year, dont want to let it go. I only got it in august but its the first car ive enjoyed driving in a long time.

be nice to say that mate

with petrol nearing ?1.30 a litre its going to cost me at least ?20 to take it out around the block.... When your only earning min wage and having to fork out stoopid amounts on bills that ?20 id rather spend on something else

As ive said in another thread im just going to get an old ?500 banger with an mot ticket on and some tax and just thrash it around.......be nice to just walk up to a car and just belt it one with a hammer and not give a fook where as with my ZS i feel i have to wrap it up in cotton wool and that paranoia isnt for me no more

In Time hopefully i can go out and buy another but most likely not ive owned MG/Rover since i passed my test and i fancy a change

RIP Rover Ownership

roverdave81 02-01-11 08:12 PM

diesel

Ive only just bought a zs diesel mk2 as the crazy insurance price for the 180 and high fuel price i decided it was getting silly puttin ?250 of fuel in the 180 every month so got the diesel which has been fittin with a chip express tuning box k&n pannel filter rear sports box and boost adjusted to 19psi run around 145 bhp and i get 40mpg round town and see 47/50 on a run which means im now spendin ?120 on diesel a month along with the saving on insurance im better off by ?160 a month

lawrence-zs180 02-01-11 09:19 PM

Dont get me wrong i love my 180 but im doing 60-80 miles a day so im spending nearly 320 a month on fuel which is daft... when im debt free then i will get one as a second car... gotta find i good derv first lol

if i were doing that kind of mileage i wouldnt have a 180. mon~fri i only do about 8 miles a day, weekends maybe a little more and i'm probably filling up once every 2 1/2 to 3 weeks.

i wouldnt go from a 180 to an old banger either, false economy.

caled 02-01-11 09:56 PM

To be honest, the fuel economy I get from my 180 isnt much worse than what I got from my old 1.6 escort, so buying an old petrol banger really isnt worth it.

A diesel banger would be the way forward, probably traditional TDi rather than TDCi engines as theres less to go wrong. Would greatly depend on the mileage you do as to whether you would offset the purchasing price in fuel consumption alone.

lawrence-zs180 02-01-11 10:18 PM

Deff not having a banger hence the zs td hunt... if you get lucky a cheap one can for min expence, i had a 96 cavalier v6 got it for 400 t+t and in the 2 years i had it it only needed tyres and oil changes

Well Im on almost minimum wage, have to live on Families Tax.
But whats the point of saving money to live life bored.
I dont need a car full stop, without one Id save ?40 (garage) ?55 (Insurance) ?75 (Petrol) ?20 (Tax), plus servicing, tyres....

BUT! Id be a lifeless, boring, zombiefied better off financially person. I dont want to live, unless life is fun. Thats why my ZS180 will continue to cosy me most of my money, take me to motorracing, car shows, marshalling.

In another page, we all talking about organising a trip to the touring cars at Brands in April. Its expensive, but we all want to go.
Come on lads, if we worried about money, we would never go out with girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, they cost more than cars...........:tease:

It's nothing to do with being boring me ode china it's more the fact of things are becoming more and more expensive and people such as myself are finding things even more difficult then say a few months back......

EDIT: Just Spotted a car i want and am going to look at

Owning such a huge petrol drinking monster of a V6 car paying ?80 a month on insurance ?20 tax etc when it sits they're because I can't afford to put fuel into it is a waste of time.......I'll be honest and say I'm having seconds of getting shut and just sorning it away but what's the point

I wish I got tax credits.... my friend who I work with has 2 kids and he gets just short of an extra ?150 a week extra on top of his wages I don't think it's fair but that's life!!!

lawrence-zs180 03-01-11 09:46 AM

cheers Gary I will have a look at those... not sure of budget prob gonna be about 2k and then when I shift the 180 some of the money from that will go to the new zed and the rest will go into savings... woooooo lol.

Do the derv's suffer with the same clutch issue?

Just had a look.... the 4th and last link look nice but the mk1 is almost the same price as the mk2 suppose its a dealer though.

caled 03-01-11 10:58 AM

Just to add a bit to what I was talking about on page 1 about stupid insurance costs, it really does depend largely on where you are.
I just ran an insurance quote through confused.com for a 54 plate 1.2l VW polo that someone is selling on another forum (quite nice, actually, just shy of 50mpg too), and it came back with a premium of 85% of the cost of my ZS 180 insurance. For an extra 15%, thats a hell of a lot more car! I think insurance companies have mistaken my postcode for somewhere in Beirut.

yeh was a help

i think soon the mk2 zs will become a collectors car like the old mgb's etc

too nice a car to get rid off for so little financial gain

how do i claim remaning tax back???

p_b82 03-01-11 12:41 PM

the derv doesn't suffer from the same issue with the hydraulics failing unless you are lucky.

the different slave cylinder mounting doesn't seem to have the same stresses going through it as the 180, and as such it is all ok.

stick a Helix paddle clutch on it, and you do have the same issues tho ;)

lawrence-zs180 03-01-11 01:09 PM
