KV6 coupe 180.
Thought i would make a little build/spec of my car. I know its not a ZS but its kind of at home here.
The car is a Rover Tomcat coupe 1998 which started life as a 1.8VVC. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...6/IMG_0586.jpg First of all i turboed the VVC engine. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...00515-1104.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...00515-1249.jpg Blew that up so fitted a T16 which i modded a fare old bit to a very good spec. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...d/82107ffa.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...d/1419f750.jpg Melted a few pistons etc but was going strong 293hp and 368ftlb. But wasn't nice to drive and everyone has a T16. So decided to sell the engine and have ago at the V6. Someone had bodged one in a bubble before (same engine bay as a tomcat). So every where on the internet was saying it can't be done and doesn't fit properly. So had a quick look and plenty of room to many keyword warriors! So brought a ZS180 donor :wavecry: Body work was battered but engine sounded sweat and had only covered 60k. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...6/9169b23d.jpg L series diesel gearbox mount and shafts from a Rover 200 http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...6/c2ef5744.jpg modified the front subframe to clear the exhaust manifold. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...6/DSCF0067.jpg |
Made exhaust collector box so both manifolds are equal length.

Used a T16 oil cooler. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps091ec40d.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps5f38a984.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps5ca28f6a.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...psc8023626.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps66cb7cae.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...psd8623a06.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...psfb373bc1.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps2c1aaaba.jpg Used 2 VVC fans. Just about fit. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...psd0bbb9c6.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...ps53d34cb4.jpg |
What it looks like atm.
http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...013_115422.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...013_115433.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...013_115459.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...013_115510.jpg Had the car rolling roaded. Is down on power I think. Quick spec is ITG filter Custom exhaust with better flowing collectors on manifolds an a custom collector box. ZS stainless middle section and rear box 2.5 inch with no cats. Manacore ignition leads all new service items plugs etc. balance valve taken out off inlet!! http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...194d37f101.jpg 174bhp @ 6666rpm 159ftlb @ 4236rpm |
What a thread, really enjoyed looking through that. Some serious time and effort looks to have gone into that!
|
If its any help bud I only made 176 bhp before I got it mapped by reidy, same mods as you mine now runs 197.6 Defo worth the 150 notes!
|
Amazing amount of time and effort gone into it, great looking bit of engineering.
Love it. :yes::yes::yes: |
Wow, just wow. Very good effort mate, looks like you are having a whale of a time with the car!
|
Nice build, you made that look easy! Looks a great installation.
|
Absolutely brilliant!
|
very good.
|
Cheers for the replys. Was all worth while doing I really do like the v6. Is like a VVC the power delivery but with a bit extra and a better noise :)
Today I sacked the collector box of and fitted a Y pipe. May go back to the roller tomorrow to see what the difference is as it does feel abit more pokey. But does sound different so hard to tell. Also fitted a oil catch tank. Will try and get some more pics up. |
Awesome work, I have a couple of questions, just for my own curiosity really. Where is the air filter drawing cool air from and also how come you have put the breather filter under the engines accoustic cover where it'll be hot?
Just wondered mate, most excellent work all round!! ;) |
That has turned out really nice... and the finish looks better than factory!

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...104_155602.jpg Will make a cold air box for it but for now it's not as bad as it looks. Today I made the vis light indicator lights. Was pretty simple got all the stuff from maplin. A few pics. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...104_114935.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...104_123749.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...104_130930.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...104_155131.jpg As I thought my balance valve isn't working. So I need a new one. I took it apart and the board if fine. Put direct power to the motor and nothing  |
Now that is a neat solution hiding them in there!
At least you know what they are doing (or not doing i suppose) |
Very neat place for the VIS Indicators :)
|
 Love this, and in tarty blue as well! :D
Always wanted a coupe when I had my R8, insurance said no though lol |
Cheers guys. Seems like a good place for them as you can easily see them when driving but there not blinding and look factoryish!
Have ordered new vis motors and oil pressure T piece. Also have brought some nice exhaust bends to make my own janspeed style exhaust manifold. I seem to be spending money on this but I'm sorry to say this is the best car I've ever driven. Just feels so right :D |
Update time.
Oil catch tank. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...117_104434.jpg Fitted a Y pipe onto the manifolds and a polybush engine stabiliser bush. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...117_084735.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...117_111520.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...117_111533.jpg Doesn't sound as good but performance feels much better. Made a shield around the air filter to help with keeping the ITG cold. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...117_104226.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...117_104243.jpg http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...117_111647.jpg Got some bends as I'm going to have ago at making the rear manifold the same length as front. Is going to be a ballache. But will hopefully be worth the effort. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...117_112528.jpg And tonight ive just been back to the rolling road. Old graph over new. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i...121_211145.jpg Gained power all over and 20ftlb low down so pretty pleased :) Still room for improvement. |
I've a feeling the 5 degree drop in temperature will have alot to do with it. I'm sure a read somewhere that each degree is worth something like 2bhp?
Nice results though, well done! |
Ye will of helped. Thought it was 5 degrees 1% power.
|
modern rollers are supposed to factor temps in to the results, so it shouldn't affect the numbers.
|
great job , look good , this is very much what I plan to do to a 400 tourer .
|
whats you @ wheel bhp figure, thats the true test not some calculated figure.
Nice job on the car by the way! |
It doesn't say wheel horse power. This Dyno is constantly used an updated on Facebook. Seems to be pretty realible on factory figures so can't be to far off and the power it pulled seems to be around correct.
|
That's a really nice build, just one q though... That sump looks a touch exposed are you going to fit a guard?
|
Very nicely executed project-love it!
Does it make much difference to how the car handles? |
Not going to bother with a sump guard as its only the same height as the cars floor and It clears speed bumps fine.
Handles a lot better now than with the T16 much lighter on the front. There's a small amount of torque steer, but not to much. Just a fun amount in the wet :) |
