Project - MK2 ZS 115 - 180 Kitted!

Finally decided to get shut of the ZR and get something a bit more... Better!

2005 MK2 MG ZS Diesel 115 with the full 180 body kit along with 11 spokes!

The colour is Firefrost Red and its pretty awesome to be fair!

Its not perfect but for what I paid its bargain!

Full MOT and the seller put new tax on it the same day I collected it, ended up getting it for £900, spot on!

Its not in bad nick, its done 163K but it drives like its done 63K, it really does.. Its got a few bits of bodywork that need sorting but il get round to it..

Iv got big plans for this beast... Anyway.. Here it is!

(Sorry about the bad pictures it was getting dark and my blackberry is gash for taking decent photo's!)

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1112-00761.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1112-00763.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1112-00764.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1112-00766.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1112-00765.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1112-00767.jpg

Gave the engine bay a clean..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1105-00641.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1105-00643.jpg

Now the bad bits :(

Bit of bad paint on the rear bumper.. Needs a respray.. Also a cracked rear light..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1105-00651.jpg

Stone chips each side on the wide arches at the rear..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1105-00653.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1105-00656.jpg

Scuff on the front bumper..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1105-00654.jpg

Few stone chips on the grill..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1105-00655.jpg

But apart from that, its not too bad really!

The headlights are a bit misty but thats due to condensation and needing a good polish up.. Passenger is the worst due to not having a cap on the back of the headlight :wall:

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1105-00666.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1105-00667.jpg

The beast in the garage..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1105-00665.jpg

Recent work its had..

New glow plugs x4
Both timing belts and tensioners 2K ago
Full service with MOT
New sump gasket
New backbox
New antifreeze

and thats it as far as I know, it only came with the service hisotry in the handbook and a few mot's, no receipts or anything like that..

But I had a good look over it and its obviously had a new turbo and fuel pump at some point as the turbo has no play at all, its like new and also the fuel pump is really clean, I can still see all the numbers marked on it etc which says to me that it hasnt been on very long..

Did have a couple of problems with the car on the way home, I pulled out to pass the old man in his slow 600 SDi and I couldnt get past :evilmad: The ZS was flat and restricted at 4K RPM.. So I pulled over and took the airbox top and filter out, put on my new MAF and open cone from my ZR, it felt a bit better but still restricted to 4K so I pulled over again at the next lay-by and took the engine cover off to find the plug to number 1 injector unplugged and the wire wrapped round the injector? Plugged it in and it felt like a new car, with the new maf and the injector plugged back in, its now flying..
Shame about the crappy 115 map though! Its so annoying it pulls hard till 2800 rpm, then lets off till 3500 rpm then it starts to pull again, I hate it!

So far iv done;
Changed all wipers for aero flats
Adjusted throttle cable as it was slack as hell
Unplugged the EGR
Changed MAF and air filter
Fixed the back bumper on properly, was literally hanging off, the bottom fixings weren't even there!
Re-sealed all leaky boost hoses
Replaced all the leak off pipes
Adjusted up the handbrake
Changed aerial for short stubby bee sting type

and just a general clean up really..

Iv ordered new injector sealing washers, new drivebelt, inlet/exh gasket, manifold gasket, new expansion cap (im sure its leaking) and some 100w H7's - Naughty naughty ;)

So yeah.. Thats the ZS, what do ya all think? Bargain?

Heres the list of future plans for the beast!

Things il be doing shortly;

Fit SDI's when new washers turn up..

Fit boost gauge (in drivers vent for now) and up the boost to 19 PSI

Change the cat for my gutted one

Fit dark ice turbo outlet pipe

Clean out intercooler, inlet manifolds and all intercooler hoses

Blank off EGR valve

Vent the breather to atmosphere

Change the damaged rear light

Remove the ZS badge off the boot (I think it looks out of place)

Fit BRM heater knobs

Fit ZR gear stick, dark ice short shift and BRM gear knob

Fit steering UJ to the end of the ZS gear linkage

Fit MG TF mirror with xenon bulbs

Changing interior bulbs to xenon bulbs

Fit xsara mist washer jets

Fitting wind deflectors

On the to do list;

Get the air-con re-gassed!

Fitting 620 Ti front brake set up

Fitting ZR160 rear brakes

Dry out and polish up headlights

Remove front bumper to change the girly horn, remove fog blanks and fit fog lights from my ZR.. May also spray the front mesh silver as its gone rusty :(

Get a fresh set of stick on number plates (hate seeing the screws through them)

Spray the bottom beam on the front bumper black with plasti-dip

Fit my cupra R front splitter

Sell my remapped ECU and get the ZS mapped and rolling roaded

Future plans;

New windscreen with top tint (screen is scratched from an old wiper)

De-orange speedo and convert all switches to blue

Full black leathers (hopefully heated)

Maybe coilovers? Failing that motobuild lowering springs

Powder coat the 11 spokes Vauxhall Artic White

Tinted windows all round (limo tint rears, smoked tint fronts)

Buy saloon extreme spoiler, remove front and rear bumpers along with the rear wide arches and get them all freshly sprayed

Fit saloon extreme spoiler

Aftermarket backbox of some sort? Id like a wingy backbox really..

Braided brake lines all round and Dot 5.1 brake fluid

MG TF steering wheel

Distant plans (il get there eventually!)

Remove the engine out of my ZR, rebuilt it with new rings, shells, gaskets etc.. new clutch, replacement gearbox, fresh fuel pump, get it all built up and ready to drop straight into the ZS one weekend..

Get a bigger waste gated turbo to put on once new engine is in...

Get a front mount intercooler

Uprated clutch, steel caged gearbox and a Type B LSD..

and thats about it really, after that I think it will be spot on!

Will take me a year or so to get all that done but once its done it will be awesome!

Thanks for looking! :D

petet16 05-11-12 07:04 PM

Bargain, yes for sure.

The rear wheel arch sections are a pain for stone chips, I've thought about using some of that clear film to protect them a bit.

Your front bumper has had paint, the intake bits around the fog lights should be Black.

A bit of tlc is all it needs imo.

Lukeus101 05-11-12 07:11 PM

Bargain that mate :) Will look forward to seeing some progress

Chaz 05-11-12 07:19 PM

Just looked at the pics again, they are shocking, il get some better ones tomorrow, in the day light this time though

I didnt know the bumper had been sprayed.. Its getting done again shortly as I want rid of the scuffs/scratches..

Quite happy with it really, just needs a bit of a tidy up and it will be spot on :)

peterzs 05-11-12 07:20 PM

great buy, decat, s/s exhaust from cat back, boost up a bit, BMC panel filter, 135 bhp, 212 ft/lbs torque. Then SDi's and a Reidy remap 159 bhp 236 ft/lbs torque.

Found a Landrover place for the injector seals.

My ZR made 155 BHP and 262 lb ft with all the usual mods and a Reidy remap, it would of been 159-160 BHP but it had a slight fault with the pump ECU..

It was mapped on Matts dyno in Yeovil.. Was planning on sticking all the ZR mods onto the ZS but the ECU wont work :(

Enright 05-11-12 09:00 PM

Don't blank off the EGR valve - on a Mk2 you'll get an engine management light and never pass an MOT. A Digimafam will overcome the flat spot for half the price of a remap.

VVC MINI 05-11-12 09:03 PM

Love the mk2 wheels. Looks a good buy that

Iv already unplugged the egr mate and it didn't bring up a code and iv had the maf unplugged and that didn't bring up a code either, being a mk2 I thought that was weird.. I then plugged in my obd2 code reader and it wouldn't read it? So I think maybe mines not completely obd2 compliant?

Where can I get a digimafam from I was just gunna buy a normal mafam for now as I plan to remap it after winter but if a digimafam smooths out the 115 crappy map and works as a mafam also that seems good! I might not even bother with a remap..

By the way, I never get an mot failed because of the engine management light??

ian zs180 05-11-12 10:10 PM

Bargain that mate and in the best colour aswell

Enright 05-11-12 10:12 PM

Yes, Mk2's aren't fully OBDII compliant. You need a Sykes Pickavant or a Rover TU4 to eliminate some of the codes. I have been able to reset a few with my ELM327, but not all.
ANY warning light that won't go out on your dashboard means instant fail these days, so best to avoid lighting 'em up in the first place!

warning lights other than ABS are still an advisory but we have been informed it will definately become a fail in the future. It was supposed to be March this year but they have delayed it for a while. No news as yet as to exactly when it will become a fail.

We invested in a SnapOn Solus to ensure we can diagnose as many as possible....doesn't do Mazda or Chrysler though for some strange reason but does do MG/Rover. £25 for a plug in....free for supporters on here.

Chaz 07-11-12 12:37 PM

And some BRM heater knobs..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1107-00685.jpg

Iv also got a BRM gearknob but need to fit the ZR gearstick with dark ice short shifter to the ZS gearlinkage (if I can) so that I can screw it on as the ZS is the push on type..

Alsoo, iv just ordered a set of 4x Heko wind deflectors, a Digimafam and all new bulbs.. xenon 80w H7 for dipped beam, xenon 100w rallye bulbs for main, xenon sidelights, xenon number plate lights, xenon white interior light and chrome indicators..

Got a busy weekend a head

ZS Phil 07-11-12 02:41 PM

Plans sound good but you might have trouble fitting the BRM knobs, I tried it on a MK1 ZS and they didnt fit properly.

Hmmm I did think they might not fit too well but iv seen a MK2 45 with BRM heater knobs so I dont know, il give it ago..

Gotta have all the centre console out now anyway... The bar connected to one of the heater knobs has jumped off, its stuck on blowing at your feet

petet16 07-11-12 05:25 PM

For the blowing feet have a check on the drivers side of the heater box, you can access the 2 cables and levers from the drivers footwell.

I turned it form the windscreen to your face and I felt the cable pop off and the knobs just spins freely now so I know how to sort it, can you get them from the bottom then?? Or do you mean the ones to the heater flaps under the dash?

If so where did you get the chrome rings? and also how come your centre console is black..? Mines grey and all scratched I fancy changing it or painting/wrapping it or something..

Chaz 07-11-12 07:18 PM

Annddd the wind deflectors arrived..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1107-00696.jpg

So fitted them this afternoon while I had a spare 2 minutes.. (excuse the state of the car, the roads round here are shocking, only washed it two days ago!)

Ah, if the knob is spinning it has probably come off the back of the heater control panel, which will need the centre console removing to reach them

The rings came off ebay, the console I painted gloss Black along with the strip on the passenger side and the gear lever surround.

I might get some black carbon effect wrap and wrap my centre console while its all out.. Its scratched to death..

peterzs 07-11-12 07:34 PM

Be careful if you do the front passenger and drivers windows, we got pulled up in Scotland when we had a mid dark tint on the fronts. Were going to impound the car, unless we removed them at the side of the road. Couldnt get them off and in the end waved us on our way.

Got home and removed the fronts as we had scratched and damaged them. Tint guy said the only legal front tints is what they came out of the factory with.

Because the back is a dark tint, the fronts look tinted anyway.

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...17kyra0001.jpg

Best check with the tint guys up your way. When I got my fronts removed there was a new Discovery, had the fronts done for a week and the police pulled him and told him to get them off. Thats down in Dorset.

Yeah the bloke who did my ZR said "You do realise the front limit is what they came out the factory with" I said " Yeah I know, just smoked on the front please :) " and he made me sign something lol..

I had limo tint on all 3 rear ones and the front two smoked, they wasnt mega dark but they were noticeable..

Iv never been pulled and iv had police walk round my ZR before and they never mentioned it, I dont think police care round here..

My mates got limo tint on all his windows on his fiesta and hes not been pulled yet..

I like the look of it so I think il risk it..

Only just bought the car so I think if I get pulled il say it came like it, they will check when I bought it and it will come up as me only owning it for a short period so I should be ok :)

If I get pulled in 6 months/12 months il be knackered

peterzs 07-11-12 07:54 PM

The Scottish police didnt like it, I saw the police car pass us and then did a U turn, then the blue lights. Put a measuring thing on the front 19.5 was the reading, anything below 20 is classified as dangerous.

3 points and £60 fine, I'm an oldie and I think they are so shocked that I'm not in my 20's it takes them back a bit. Always polite and helpful, think it makes a lot of difference as to how you get treated.

Been stopped 4 or 5 times in the yellow one, only car I have had so much attention, some of my own making I suppose!!!

Anyway sounds like you know the ins and outs, just didnt want you to go ahead without a bit of a warning.

Iv never been pulled in my life..

I dont think the police are too bothered round here, I do live out in the sticks though so I suppose that has something to do with it haha..

ZS Phil 07-11-12 09:03 PM

I stand corrected, maybe the MK2 has different splines to the MK1 or something? To be honest the ones I tried on a MK1 ZS were from my old ZR and were machined from solid aluminium (not genuine BRM ones) but fitted the ZR perfectly but not the ZS... Anyway Ill stop waffling, they clearly fit a MK2 and look great :D

Chaz 08-11-12 12:48 PM

More goodies come this morning..

All my bulbs arrived...

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1108-00706.jpg

And also my digi-mafam..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1108-00707.jpg

Differences in the headlights..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1108-00708.jpg

Driverside is obviously with the new bulbs..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1108-00710.jpg

Interior light.. Mega bright white..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1108-00717.jpg

Iv got matching bulbs for my TF mirror, just need to get it fitted..

Boot light.. Mega bright as well!

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1108-00718.jpg

Fitted the aerial for my bee-sting one instead of the usual massive thing..

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1108-00716.jpg

And also got my BRM knobs on, BUT they are backwards if that makes sense.. The pointers are pointing down instead of up, I guess there's no way round it, its just how they fit on the ZS? Or am I just being stupid and havn't done it properly?

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1108-00713.jpg

I got the digi-mafam set up im using setting 1 as its a new maf anyway but its now responsive down low and the 115 flat spot seems nearly non-existent but I was wondering.. Whats the black switch for next to the mode switches?

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/...1108-00712.jpg

petet16 08-11-12 02:50 PM

My BRM knobs are the same, I've got used to them now.
