Goodwood Restoration
I thought I would start a project thread for my car, with any luck it will spur me on to actually get on with things as well :)
So, to bring things up to date (most of this info is elsewhere in the forum): December 2014 I picked up a MK2 Goodwood Green ZS180 on an 04 plate. It was purchased with crap paint (story goes a bodyshop messed up when fixing some stone chips), but other issues were unexpected, which included:
First things first, sort the brake lights (Sorry no pictures). Turned out that whoever fitted the sheddist (Actually Black Ice), was a bit heavy handed and installed the bracket over the reverse sensor wiring. so since the sheddist was not working, I removed the bracket, got rid of the crap wiring and refitted the bracket and a new sensor. Reverse lights now working as they should. So I went to look at the sheddist, turns out it was not bled and the reservoir was leaking big time. So replaced (and relocated) the reservoir and rebled with the slave disconnected from the gearbox. Reassembled and now all good again. I then went to install my new temperature sensor to behind the bumper, only to find that there was no wiring for it, indeed the wiring had been cut fright back to where it entered the loom, so I have made up some more wiring and fitted it. After a reset of the ATC I found that the "Hedghog" had died, so at POL last year I found someone who had a spare one, brought it and fitted it to my car.. all working well now - except I then found out that the Aircon is not working due to a damaged (hole) aircon radiator (although i think its called something else)... so thats a job for the next few weeks! On to the rear lights. This is the state of the lights when I got them, not bad but an MOT failure: http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/attachme...7&d=1428915437 http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/attachme...8&d=1428915445 So we set about sanding them down and then putting a subtle tint (actually 2k "black perl" paint) and decent 2k clear over them, then once dried polished them up and fitted them: With these pictures you can also see the new Extreme spoiler that was fitted to the boot. http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/attachme...5&d=1428915070 http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/attachme...6&d=1428915077 Excuse the shorts! And the paintwork... Next my Missus decided to get her hand on some of the engine bits n bobs (She's just finishing off the engine cover at the moment. So while she was doing that I set about following the guide on here and replaced the thermostat. This is her first two finished items from the engine bay: http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/attachme...3&d=1437486061 http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/attachme...4&d=1437486078 The cracking effect is due to an experimental paint called "The Kracken" from one of her suppliers. http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/attachme...8&d=1439890250 http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/attachme...9&d=1439890350 http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/attachme...0&d=1439890354 http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/attachme...1&d=1439890359 Here you can also see the new pipe I fitted to connect the BMC back to the car. In the last few weeks I have done LED lights into the roof lighting and added an MGF interior Mirror. I also added black oak to the dash/centre console: https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...48&oe=57320F2F And yes I am aware the car needs a hoover! I think thats about up to date now! Sorry for the long post, I hope to get the car into the paint shop in the next few weeks and have something more to put here! |
Progress for the last few months has been non existent as I have been rebuilding www.ultimatezs.co.uk (I will update when I am allowed to put that live!) for Ollie and his car, http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/showthre...ght=UltimateZS :)

You have a talented lady there.
The air con rad is commonly known as a condenser, IIRC I still have the one from GV51. My rear lights have a similar tint, the last time they got MOTed in January 2015 they failed after passing 5 tests on GV51 and then FE54 so I now have a MOT only set as well. |
Looking good mate, love the air brushed stuff.....keep up the good work. :)
|
Sometimes you need a thread like this to get motivated, I should know! At least it's going in the right direction.
|
Thank you for the positive comments guys :) it really does help.

Good on you for getting started.I really need the weather to pick up so I can get started on my car the poor soul has been stuck indoors for months now.
|
Yep few bits there to be getting on with from the start mate. Some good work by the Mrs in the engine bay though.

I guess you could get it pressure tested. When fitting use new O rings. |

A few weeks ago I picked up a duel exit exhaust and heat shield, which I have now fitted to the car, I think it looks a lot better with the twin exits now.

Hit a pothole at the side of the road on the way to work this morning while avoiding someone the other side of the road overtaking a tractor, wasn't fast, about 40 in a national country road but it made one almighty bang through the front passenger suspension.
Quite a large Gash in the tyre wall (although not letting air out yet), tracking is out and it feels a bit "woolly" although not pushed the car at all since, literally limped to work and will limp it home again later. Plan is to look at it over the weekend, strip down the suspension etc and see if anything is broken. In the mean time I will either borrow the missuses car or get her to drop me off to work I think! |

I made a claim a few years ago for a tyre, and they rejected it because it was just inside their dates for inspections - had it been outside they would have paid up. |

To add to the saga....
Was stationary at a roundabout earlier with handbrake on and and someone drove into the back of me... Attachment 5940 So... I guess I need at least a new bootlid! Will whip bumper etc off this weekend, but have an interview later and not sure about getting there yet! |
Oh no - that is a an utter PITA
|
Is the other party going to cover the costs?
Sorry to hear this mate :( Hope the interview goes better |

Looks good!

So back to my car, the other day a few boxes turned up.. So I set about collecting all the bits I needed and then yesterday I spent the whole day stripping down the front end of the car and rebuilding it with the new parts.
Sorry no pictures, but the parts were a TTV Lightened flywheel, a brand new clutch from DMGRS and the gearbox I got from a member on here with LSD fitted. Wow what a difference it has made! The car is much more responsive and sits at a lower rev on the motorway at cruising speeds. Had a few issues, exhaust is in the way of two bolts for example, but worked through them and got it all done in a day. Now I am sunburnt in odd places (front of my legs only, underneith of my arms, one side of my face) all due to the odd angles you lay in when doing things like this on the drive! Oh and the bath turned a funny black colour when I lay in it last night! Next month I will be ordering the special paint and hopefully booking it into the body shop for Bex to spray it up and sort out the paintwork once and for all! Oh on the subject of paint... can anyone recommend a good Rotary or DA polisher that won't break the bank but will do a mirror like finish on the lacquer? Also I am considering stainless manifolds, is Janspeed the only option? or can I get them custom built elsewhere? |

That reminds me, I have sourced a new boot (in XPG, but hey) so I will be heading down to christchurch at some point this week to collect that :) |

where did you get the lightweight flywheel, something im planning on doing shortly. |

2 good mods for a zed, lightened flywheel and torsen box.
Good to see it all gradually coming together. *edit* Tony Law and Hayward & Scott have done v6 manifolds, I don't know if they are still available, or prices |
Good man.
She doing something special on the paint for you? |

Thanks Pete,
Tony Law won't do them any more and H&S want £1400 for a set of manis and a cat... (Compaired to £800 odd from Janspeed)... I wonder if they are worth that much more than Janspeeds? Anyway back to the car, Yesterday on the way home there was a clunk from under the car, I thought nothing of it till a few miles up the road when I lost the ability to change gear... Or rather change effectively, the gears were there but I had to almost push the stick into the respective bumper to select them. A quick look under the car and I could see the issue: https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...8c&oe=5803A2C8 Turns out that this box has had a few threads stripped from some bolt holds, some of them have been repaired with a size smaller hexicoil (or something) but the steady bar mount had not been. On further investigation I realised that its just the first half that was stripped and the std bolt was only just biting (had a spare bolt). I couldn't find another specialist washer needed for the retaining bolt to hold the bush in place, so I have got three various sized washers and built up the "dish" that way, then used a longer bolt to bolt the steady bar back into place. Hopefully that will hold till I find a spare correct washer (this is my every day car as well remember!) Gears have been restored, but now its making my question the gearbox itself... I think its fine, but when you have two or three smaller issues with something you do question the box as a whole! Also noticed that the lower ball joints need replacing (I did notice when changine the box but it got to late and I didn't have them) the new ones have turned up now... so I will do them as soon as possible. - Does anyone know how easy it is to change them? |
I seem to recall that the H&S manifolds cost more than Janspeed, but £1400 is a bit stiff, I'd be wanting some big gains for that kind of money.
The lower ball joints aren't bad to do, easier if you have access to a press to get the old out and the new ones in, so essentially wheel and disc off, split the lower and upper ball joint and remove the whole upright off the car, when I did mine I heated the lower joint so it knocked out really easily, and like wise when I fitted the new ones |
Just thought I would update...
So things have been slow at the moment, for two reasons, I have purchased a CDTi ZTT for the daily commute (80 mile round trip) and ended up spending money fixing that. But also because I had some issues with a well known spares provider who "lost in the post" some Mk2 headlights I purchased (Two sets, and over two months before finally refunding me). Anyway to cheer myself up I decided to change the seatbelts (thanks to Nigel ;)) as per: https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t34....9e&oe=57E64A06 https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...13&oe=57E62F33 https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...93&oe=57E5E061 https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...0b&oe=57E62F27 https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...1e&oe=57E519E4 https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...77&oe=57E5F36A And also picked up a rear strut brace for almost no money :) so will fit that over the weekend (Pictures to follow). I knwo its not going to be to everyones taste and the red belts in a green car does feel BRM esk, but its not the same red and the car WILL change colour soon lol |
MG Metro springs to mind.

Red and green works. Reminds me of Christmas :D
|
I suppose I should update this thread :)
The GoodWood ZS is still on the road, but has had no end of problems from the rear shunt, from leaking seals, to the new bootlid not opening or closing correctly. So, since I have been offered a better base to start from, this car is being taken off the road within the next few weeks and stripped down. I will keep some bits myself in our unit and some bits have already been spoken for. But it all depends what I need to do to get the "new" ZS on the road again :) (More on that in a new thread, once its on my drive). |
Ooooo keep us posted Sam :)
