MOT time
okay so next month is MOT time and I am looking for knowledgable folks to tell me exactly what will be assessed and also what I can do before hand to prevent a fail. cheers in advance...
|
Okay a list your after:
Lets start with: Lights Wipers Horn Tyres Ball Joints Body construction/condition Suspension Exhaust emissions Windscreen seatbelts Windscreen washer fluid Brakes Hand Brake Operation of all brakes Indicators Brake lights Corrosion Thinks thats the list! |
is your a 54 plate mate?
|
My 52 plate has gone thru' both times with nothing amiss, this year it is due in October, I don't think there is anything to worry about.
Yours should be fine if all the obvious things are checked before hand. |
yeah 54 plate...
|
i could list everything that is checked but i really can't be bothered,
Here a link to the testing manual http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/contents.htm |
mines is due in October first time i have had to mot a car in about 5 years not looking forward to it
|
if it fails it will be something silly like a bulb or tyre, other than that the MGR cars are a solid car, and if they fail an MOT its normally the rear bushes that fail
|
in follow up...
Lights - just replaced most bulbs Wipers - just bought bosch ones Horn - working Tyres - need to replace front 2 (£330!!) Ball Joints - WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW DO I CHECK THEM? Body construction/condition - seems ok Suspension - SEEMS FINE BUT HOW DO I CHECK THIS? Exhaust - no issues emissions - cant check Windscreen - COUPLE OF STONE CHIPS (ISSUE?) seatbelts - fine Windscreen washer fluid - will top up Brakes - ALL NEED REPLACING (NEED A HOW TO FOR THIS GUYS!!) Hand Brake - works Operation of all brakes - car stops pretty good! Indicators - all working Brake lights - all working Corrosion - none BOLD = HELP!!! Cheers guys |
Ball joint, jack car up and rock the wheel in the 3 oclock and 9 olclock postion and top and bottom, MG ball joints are normally very solid.
Suspension, jack it up and check the shock absorbers for major fluid leaks and that the springs aren't broken. Brakes, theres a how to for the rears and i'm doing a front one in the next half hour Windscreen, depends on how big the chips are and where in the screen they are. Hope that helps |
yeah it does cheers, the chips are tiny and not in the area shown on the MOT manual linky!
as for the how to, I look forward to it and remember to mention tools etc cos I'm dumb! cheers matey |
Shouldn't be owt to worry about, although its worth giving her the once over.
Only failed 1 MOT.That was for a back box that miraculously split wide open during the test lol.Did me a favour as I got the Piper cat back instead :punk: She's 6 this year so fingers crossed for october lol Shroon |

Do some shopping around mate. All the best, Gary. |
thats for the same as are on it. 2 low profile continental sport cantact 2 205/40ZR17
cant find them anywhere cheaper and want to stick to good quality low profile tyres. I am open to suggestions though... |

I paid £88 a corner for Continentals (about 12 months ago now mind), but inflation isn't running that high! I'm sure someone else will come along with an opinion shortly. Gary. |
Defo shop around, that is a ridiculous price to pay! I only paid around £73 a corner all in.
|
was that for good quality low profile ones?
|
Depends on what you call good quality! Not all well known brands are that good. Mine are Hankook K104s, very good tyres in both wet and dry conditions. Mine have covered over 50 laps and never lost their grip or 'went off' like others I have used. I've been on and off tracks for years and not come across any better other than slicks and cut slicks of course!
There are others to be had and also very good, you pays your money you takes your choice! |
wheres the best place to look then as kwikfit site had only two sets fitting the 180?
|
sod Kwik Fit
Try some tyre places........we have ATS Euromaster, STS Man On Wheels, Tyreweb all down our way. Last place you would ever catch me going is Kwik Fit.......even on the poxy van. Jim |
any good places in fife though??
