Thanks for the responses, @CDTI, the exhaust needs either patching on the pipe or the backbox replacing to pass the MOT by getting it through the emissions test, unless you know someone who is willing to wave the testing rod in the fresh air for a reading :D
@Dan, the service book says it had its 75k service at 39k miles and has the cambelt box ticked, so id say thats a yes. However, for anyone planning on buying this car to keep i guess they would change it again sooner or later ? |
nothing to stop a previous owner ticking the cambelt box!

The Haynes manual suggests 90k for belts with 60k advisable for mostly town driven cars. Mine sits at 47k currently so i think its safe to say that while the service book has it ticked, the belts have not been done and would be reasonably due up in 13k miles. |
the belts on a 180 are due after 90k or 6 years which ever comes first. they have snapped after 60k, thats why its advised

According to the absolute letter of guidance, yes. Personally im not that concerned when its only 47k showing, regardless of the belts being 6 years old or not. Plus im not forking out money i wont get back for a car im not keeping. Or not driving, whichever lasts longest.

As far as I'm concerned, if the car's done 30k and is 6 years old, it needs a cambelt change, no questions asked. My friends TT had it's cambelt snap- the manual recommended only mileage and said nothing about age. His cambelt went before it was "due". He successfully got £1500 out of Audi as they should have included this information in the service book, or contacted the previous owner (who was his sister from new) that there is an error in the service book.
Belt(s) MUST be replaced at a 6 year gap regardless of mileage (or if car does 90k first, even then I'd change it a little before to err on the side of caution). .........................that said, I just checked, my 12 year old clio hasn't had a cambelt change, getting it done for my little sister when she passes her test :laugh: |
Its a moot point either way, i can neither afford to change them nor want to as im not keeping the car anyway.

my 180 is due its belts in january, current milage is 28k. a £500 belt change in some instances adds £750 in value to some vehicles

Yeah but zaz to be fair this is an mgzs forum , where 180 owners have experienced belts snapping at all intervals.
They are mainly speaking from experience and not trying to fob you off etc. I just feel you are not giving the " experts" ( being us) any credit. We speak from experience as I said. And as a guide I paid 3k for a 2005 mk2 zs180 with 27000 miles on the clock. £1300-£1500 is very reasonable for a mk1 which is due a belt change, end of. But good luck with the sale. But if that belt goes its new engine time, no matter how you word your 6 year / 90k mile speech And seems as your car has been for sale since nov 08, and you paid 5 k for it not too long ago id take what I can . Sorry mate but all IMHO |

i was looking at other cars, performance, age and milage wise to my 180. mine has 28k miles and is a 2004/53 plate zs 180 about 2.5k civic type r around 6.5k astra gsi around 5.5k clio 182 around 5k octavia vrs around 5.5k such a shame the zs is such a cheap car. its bad to sell, and great to buy |
Might strip it for parts, probably worth more that way, if a little dirty and time consuming

stripping any older 180 in all honesty a wise move. its hard to say but i will consider this option when i move on from my zs (not for a while yet though!) the second hand engine alone should fetch £500. the mk1 straights are going for around £250 on ebay, spoiler £80-£100 then what ever you would get for the body panels ect

Back to plan A, got nowhere to keep the car when it gets stripped down.
