locking the flywheel question?

Has anyone tried unlocking the crankshaft pulley by getting someone to put it into 5th and standing on the brake? have read a few threads on this but does it really work? Would be great rather than removing starter motor as the rave cd say's?

Thanks Andy. will try that first as it would save soooooo much time. For a laugh I contacted Arnold sharks for a price to do the timing belt - the reply -
?259 we don't do the water pump if it's ok, only if it's leaking.

So they want to just change the belt and tensioner only for ?259 then if the pump goes they want to take all that off again and change the pump then probably another belt and tensioner? lol ?? go figure? :spam:

take it that 3 1/2 hours labour theyve quoted you to do it and parts, can do it in two so if they arent a mg rover or ex dealer might not know how long it takes, but then the mechanics dont do the pricing and sometimes it makes us look like complete idiots even if it isnt us thats said whatever.
plus hardly see the waterpumps leaking, and you dont need it off to fit the belt so they wont change it if it doesnt need one, think its ?30-?40 for a pump
