Help needed!?

I keep toying with selling up, and getting something a little more old school, as I only use the zed once a week, so it just sits in the garage. Problems is 180's are worth nothing atm. I would want somewhere near £2300 for mine which is well over priced when your looking at ebay/pistonhead etc How much is it worth with my spec?

So then I think I'll break it, then I would get somewhere near that money for it, but what a hassel!! How quickly could I expect to break and sell all the bits?

I dont know what to do! I am thinking of going back to a 90's hot hatch, RS turbo fiesta/XR2/205gti......

Here is the spec:

piper 270 cams and verniers
Reidy remap (210bhp)
inner wing filter
decat
piper exhaust
janspeed manifolds
lightweight flywheel
AVO coilovers
quaiff diff
fully polybushed shell
upper and lower rear braces
parada spec 2 tyres
Compomotive mo5's with new falken tyres
braided hoses
Flocked Dash
Alacantra interior
Loz- custom gauges- with pro comp gauage (imported from the US)
Sony CD player MP3- focal speakers in the rear.

Help please!

It's a good spec, would be a shame to break it but as you say you would definitely get more for the parts than the car as a whole.

MG 53 ZED 15-07-12 11:45 AM

Keep it in a few years the ZS will be old skool aswell, plus with those specs to nice to break.

POMPSKI 15-07-12 12:15 PM

I take it you are on about the Mk1? That is a superb spec model its insane to think you cant even get £2300 for it. Break it, then I can buy some stuff off you :)

talkingcars 15-07-12 12:33 PM

Advertise it and include the line "swap for 90's hatch - money either way".

But will you drive the new car any more often?

talkingcars 15-07-12 12:35 PM

Also you can mention that it was in Safety First - sept 2011 in the report about Zed10.

Dan1971 15-07-12 01:55 PM

If you fancy a change fair enough. I'd love an RST.

You might get that for it if someone comes along and appreciates the spec.

I agree, infact I think the MK1 zs is old school already, just have to wait for the market to realise that! Don't think it would look out of place at any Retro car show do you?

andy-81 15-07-12 05:34 PM

i think its cruel to break it, once you have you'll wish you didnt. I would keep it

stamford 15-07-12 07:38 PM

A real shame to break it but needs must. Worth £2300 but the market says otherwise. One day the ZS will be mentioned in the same breath, that I am sure of. I've been there many times before and owned nice cars and years after had seen them regarded as 'in' and worth a few bob. I'm sure you will recoup the monies back from breaking it due to the parts you have fitted but you may be left with a few due to high costs. People will want all for next to nothing these days.

POMPSKI 15-07-12 08:07 PM

If you still have the standard parts, why dont you sell the mods and keep the ZS tucked away for the future?

Im sure there will be a time when 180's in good condition will earn you way more than £2300

daytona365 15-07-12 08:07 PM

Keep it, YOU WILL REGRET IT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Dan1971 15-07-12 08:10 PM

I don't think there will ever be this "classic" status for the ZS. :sorry:

XR3i - SRi - GTe - GTi - RS Turbo - are all iconic cars that started off the hot hatch and were all fast versions of what were accepted as brand/market area leaders - like the Escort, Astra and Golf

I doubt very much that the ZS180 will ever be held in such regard being likened to the Rover 45 which was hardly at the top of it's peer group. We love them though .....

If you don't have the standard bits - take them in trade for the bits you've got - you'd end up with a standard car - and we'd all benefit.

Have to disagree.............xr3i mmmmmmmm d**k heads car. RS Turbo, brainless car.......all the others, just joyriders specials. I never liked them when they were new, and still hate them now.........
I agree the Rover 45 = grandads car, but the zs had that magic factor...An MG badge, and we are all so snobby arent we............, plus no one ever made a TY 45!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !:mml::mml:

talkingcars 15-07-12 09:01 PM

I paid £100 for my first mini - £40 for the second - seen the price of minis recently?
I paid £325 for my maestro and paid less for the others I've had - seen the price of a maestro recently? Even a base model fetches twice that.

Very true, the zeds will be regarded as classics at some point in the future.

That is part of the point, I could have something far less reliable and partial.

These are things I need to consider if I break it, all those people looking for a bargain.

I agree with Dan the ZS will never be a classic sorry to say.

I've had a "brainless car" & "d**khead's" car or 2 in my time, and I find myself trying to recreate the feeling from driving them. The car I most want is a Fiesta RST, I had one 5 years ago. £300 saw 189bhp it handled, it stopped, and you could use every bit of it. So much fun, and these characteristic made these, and so many of the cars of this era iconic!

As good as the ZS is, it doesn't have instant power, and I find myself being very cautious with it. I do like it a lot don't get me wrong, it is not bags of fun though.

I've had some interest in the car, still not sure what to though.

Nobrainer 15-07-12 10:25 PM

It's not just the money for the bits though. There's lot of time and effort involved in fitting that lot and swapping them out again, which isn't the labour of love that fitting them is.

Quadcam24 16-07-12 07:00 AM

not too long back id have given your full asking price, because i realise how good it could be on track.....

id never swap it for an rsturbo, it will rip an rsturbo a new one under any conditions.

stamford 16-07-12 07:10 AM

I know where you are coming from Andy, been there myself and miss previous cars from different eras. Before I bought the ZS I was after a Vauxhall Firenza, but could not find one anywhere, was considering an HS Chevette but too costly and again rare. So I went for the ZS as a new car at the time. I was always a Vauxhall nut.

As for classic status, I have to disagree to those that say no it won't as I think it will. Like James has said about Mini's it hasn't taken long for them to shoot up in price even for a basket case. Cars once seen as mundane and average can now fetch silly money such as mk4 and 5 Cortinas etc.

DuckFeet 16-07-12 09:32 AM

I think you'd regret it, but if you do get rid I'd try to get standard parts in p/x for your mods and sell it as standard.

Fred68 16-07-12 10:41 AM

I spend a lot of time in and around Modern and not so modern Classics and tbh they do have there place, but for me my 180 is the best drive!! Last weekend I drove an XR3I followed by my mates Talbut Sunbeam Lotus :) The XR3i is pants by ZS standards!! No ps, no power and no brakes to stop it!! It's what it is but I don't remember my old one being so bad? But what changes is our perception of what these cars used to be like. The ZS spoils us somewhat.
As for the Sunbeam Lotus? What can I say 235bhp with rear wheel drive and less than 1000Kg's !! It's quick as in a proper quick way!! Not so good in the bends as the Zed though !!

col180 17-07-12 03:47 PM

Great spec would be a shame to brake it, let us know if you decide to sell whole car would be intrested

ZRed 17-07-12 05:23 PM

pm sent

James Raby 23-07-12 10:13 PM

If it was a saloon, I'd be all over it!!!
Love a red zs and love mo's especially!!

Btw, escort rst would need a stage 2 turbo a decent single pass pro alloy or pace large fmic and about 23psi just to satisfy!

That = £££££ also, still mfi management, efi conversion is another 800 in parts and a lot of grazed knuckles!!!

James Raby 23-07-12 10:13 PM

Then brakes, suspension and exhaust (mongoose)

Nobrainer 24-07-12 10:07 AM

This is now sold.

I've only just waxed the ones on there! I hope your not planning on bending any!

Be worth getting the oil cooler, and throttle body........

Nobrainer 24-07-12 10:05 PM

Was hoping for something with a few less stone chips on the front! :-) but maybe I should take the bonnet and do something like this to it :chair:
