Is your car an MG or Rover?

As the title suggests this is a debate about branding. I have very strong views on this but I'm not posting just yet! I'm just interested what others have to say. :cylon:

mine is an mg, it says so on the v5. i have on occasion referred to it as a rover (generally when somethings wrong lol) tbh if it had been produced with a rover badge i would still have bought it tho. When i 1st got my zr i hated ppl calling it a rover but now it doesnt bother me.

I call mine an MG but i dont mind if people call it a rover.

It does say rover on the rear lights.

MG through and through. Like Craig says, that's what it says on the V5. One of my friends has an Escort RS Cosworth and always refers to my car as a Rover. My arguement to him is that whilst he may be an RS owner, it says Ford on the tax dics and on the V5 where as the MG just happens to share it's factory and basic shape with Rover ! He says that MG is to Rover what RS is to Ford. Utter rubbish. RS's are occasional specials whereas MG's are a brand in there own right. They're not badged Rover anywhere and no documents contradict this. A Rovers a Rover, MG's an MG ! :)

Easiest way to answer this question?

"Yes!"

I tend to not get sucked into the argument TBH. I know what my car is, if people are too ignorant to know the difference then that's their problem, not mine :)

I hate to argue Mat, but your car will say "Rover", "MGRover", "Landrover", "BMW" and "Honda" as does mine and I'm sure that many other MGZS will say so too.

Also, Ford and there RS's your mate is true in some respects, MG were totally independant of the big car makers until the merger with British Leyland with all its brands inc Jaguar, now look at Jaguar, many folk reckon that the new "XF" is a New Ford Mondeo, which it is really albeit stretched!!! anyway so your right, and you mate is also right.
You have also got to remember that the ZS180 is no where near is sister car Rover 400/45 as the with Ford's RS's, MGRover used the basic shell and some production components used in the Rover 400/45, but under the bonnet and powertrain it is a totally different car as anyone will know.
BTW, the Focus RS is just a basic Focus CL, did you know that the windscreen in Focus RS is thinner that a production Focus!!, and did you know that the Antiroll bar in the ZS180 is thicker than the one used in the Rover 45 2.0 V6!!!

Yes, i'm aware of that - i've been a long term fan, supporter and modder of MG's for a few years now so i do know their parts have Rover stamps on and various 'imported' components such as Land Rover alternators etc. My statement said they are not BADGED or REGISTERED as a Rover, but as an MG instead where as an RS will always be badged, taxed and registered as a Ford. So my mate isn't right - RS's are Ford specials, MG is a seperate brand.
When William Morris started the MG brand in 1924 one of it's core values was as an affordable sports car and even back in those days MG' were badge engineered cars that were recognised as being a brand on there own. RUF converts Posches in Germany but RUF is recognised as a seperate car manufacturer.
Yes, i know the Focus RS is based upon a CL, much in the same way the original Cosworth was based upon the peasent spec' 3 door L model. And no i wasn't aware about the anti-roll bar but it reinforces again how different the MG is from the Rover ! :)
