Fed up...
Been a little while since I was really active on here, so I'll fill you all in. Spent the last weekend trying to get my ZS sorted since the clutch slave went pop. Lawrence-zs180 very kindly sent me his old slave and master so I thought I'd do the clutch while I was at it at lubricate the arm. My mate Mike came over to give me a hand so, happy days. Or not.
Trying to get the roll pin out on the box and selector arm was impossible, so the box came out with it attached - turns out the arm has been fixed permanently to the back of the 'box, I guess to try and take some of the slack out of the 'shift. Then we find that the clutch arm is totally seized, the arm was so sticky it had the effect of riding the clutch and even left soaking for a few days the arm won't play ball so we can't lubricate it to rectify what caused the original problem. Looking for a new 'box I'm being quoted £150-£200 and thats after spending something like £130 on bits last weekend. The car still needs a bonnet, grille, bumper and wing to get it looking smart bodywise - question is how far do I go? Do I try and recoup some of my cash by breaking it or do I suck it up and sort it out? Bloody cars... |
We tried to remove the pin from ZS's one, beat us as well!!!
Think you need a lift to get under and have a proper swing at it. Sounds a right pain in the .... |
Who is quoting boxes at that price? I'm sure I can do it cheaper. Just need the details.
|
It depends on how much you love the car and if you feel like you can justify the money. I always look at it like if something happened to my Zed that cost say £500 to fix would it be worth it. Id have to say yes, 1 because i absolutly love my car and 2 because realistically what else could i get for the money. Everyone's circumstances are different but personnaly if possible i would always opt to save the Zed.

I want to sort it but is it worth putting more cash into a car with such little value? |
Well things are looking up a little - just got a gearbox. £80 cash from a 60k mile car. Happy days. Just got to crawl under the car and get the selector off. Should be a challenge! Now there's just a small matter of a bonnet, a grille, a wing, a bumper and a rear door.
I'll do all this and then you know HGF will follow! :axe: |
I think there are a few being broken on eBay, sure I saw a silver one somewhere! I'll see if I can find the links
|
Keep it and fix it. You WILL regret it if you sell/scrap it........

did you see the link i posted about the 120 being broken on ebay and all parts were £10?
|
I did mate, thanks. The gearbox is only a few miles up the road - cheaper the postage...

Hi Adam
Found a few zeds being broken on eBay that may help: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-ZS-1-8-...item3ccbcfc605 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/mg-zs-5doo...item19d60c3ea3 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-ZS-Pass...item33791b0ae7 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/mgzs-180-v...item564dc82f26 Also a fair few 45s being broken http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_od...aking&_sacat=0 Shocked at how many are being broken for minor issues, if they were worth more running I'd be tempted to start a sideline buying 'dwad' cars and getting them back on the road. |
Thats the trouble, worth more for the bits than a up and running one.
|
I should have a bumper and wing shortly that you can have. Would just be a case of getting it to you.
|
Well I got my gearbox yesterday, so that's lightened my mood quite a bit!

Cars can get you down, I've been there myself many times! Once you get the bits you need it's a case of finding the mental energy to do it, then all's good. ;)
|
Thanks for the gee-up, Stamford! I'm feeling a lot better about the car now I've got the box sorted. Just need to find a linkage now. Just typical of a bloody ZS - they get under your skin!
|
Well I have just got mine out of its boxed in parking bay on the drive, covered in dirt and cat paws! Will give it a clean and fill the tank up as it's going to be used next week as the Landys turbo hose has blown and sounds bad. Good job it is MOTd and taxed! A few weeks back it wasn't loved so know the feeling!
|
Well I managed to find a local scrappy with a MNX ZS today, sadly most of the panels were no good, but I did get a grille for £10.

Ah, OK mate. I might know someone who could use them in TY - is it OK to ask if they'd like them?
Well I've got the 'box in, and everything reassembled, thanks to my mate Mike who drove down from Surrey to help. So it's now got a new clutch, a 60k gearbox, fresh 'box oil and a new bearing. Should be good for while now. Only slight issue is the clutch pedal, it's very soft, I'd like a bit more feel in the pedal. Went scrap hunting as well this week managed to get an MNX grille, too, so while the bonnet is still awful, I've fitted the grille. The main thing is, after months, the car works again! http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8334/8...c5529b48_c.jpg |
Sounding very positive, good one! It'll all come good in the end ;)
|
I hope so. I'm receiving some gentle reminders from the other half that I ought to be looking to sell it - too many cars apparently!
|
They just don't understand! Threaten to trade her in!

I think I have it sussed by having a woman who appriciates cars and by sharing them.
I bought the maestro and she paid for the engine conversion. I bought my ZS. She bought her ZR. I bought the MGF and "gave" it to her. I do enough on the ZR to keep her happy and then she doesn't mind so much when I spend time on the others. |
Well im a woman and i love MG'S, so find the right woman and your sorted.
Dont give up on the zs mine has has fortunes over the seven years ive owned it, but i dont regret any of it, it is a decent care that if they are looked after properly , they look after you!!!! ive got a 2001, red zs ive bought to replace and upgrade things on mine if i can be of help with any bits needed????? good luck :-D |
