ZS180 and ZT190
 

Apart from the obvious differences, what is the difference with the engine to have the different power output? I was just wondering if there was a simple mod from the 190 to put on the 180 to get the extra 10 bhp...

My searching suggests it's purely a question of altering something to do with the timing and the cams?

better induction and better exhaust , cams are the same but timed slightly different.

The ZT190 and ZT180 use different cams from the ZT160 and ZS180.

i wouldnt worry that the ZT190 has an extra 10 bhp as ive got a ZS180 with decat / full system exhaust and green cotton air filter and had a race today with a green ZT190 who by the sound of it had the same sort of mods as me and i killed him he came pass me on the a45 with a smile on his face which lasted for all of 10seconds but driving fast on public road is never a good thing

A standard 180 is way quicker than a standard 190 anyway but with MG Rovers general reluctance to spend money on different parts I thought there may be a simple 10 bhp mod.

+ a zt would be heavyer making a 180 faster also

The ZT190 has better induction that the standard ZS180 set-up, as the ZS180 has the same induction as the Rover 45 2.0 V6, which is restrictive, as Ralph said the 190 has different cams and a different ECU MAP as to that found in the 180.

lol, this has been discussed soooo many times and always divides opinion. for me different cams makes no sense, i have the original mgr launch brochure for the mg's and it specifically says the only engine differences are better induction and better exhaust and the ecu map.
Maybe the cams have a different part number as they are destined for a different car but are they actually different, can you visibly see any difference.
Iirc, Rovadose on xpf has looked into all this, hes had the engines in bits and played with the cams whilst modifying etc and he says they are the same cams but timed 4 degrees differently.

We all know a zs 180 will make a real 190 bhp when all you have done is the induction and added a full exhaust. So what exactly are the different cams doing in the zt 190 because if anything they are actually losing power. How can a zt 190 with different cams, re map, better induction and exhaust only make 187 bhp, it makes no sense, why would they go through the expense of different cams if they give no power gain?
Ive known zs 180's make that power with just a de cat and induction mods. :question:

I just chucked in a 180 into my ZT 190. It is a lot bigger effort than you would think. Basically, the engine needs to be stripped down to the bear block.

What would be interesting is to fit the 190 in the ZS 180 and then have it remapped. The ZT ecu is not directly remappable, but the ZS ecu is. Matt Reidy was able to get 200 out of a ZS 180. It would be interesting if he could get more with the ZT 190 engine.
