What's this light , comes on and after driving for 5 minutes , stopping and restarting the car it will go out

Low coolant, they are very sensitive, just add a splash of coolant and it'll stay out, make sure it isn't actually losing any coolant of cousre

Do later 180s have this? Or have I got it wrong as assumed it was a 180 the OP has?

I noticed yesterday I've lost around 3-4 mm of coolant from the bottle , looked into the v at the thermostat but couldn't see any coolant.. any other places these leak

petet16 23-06-14 10:22 AM

I think all the mk2's have it Mick.

3 or 4 mm suggests you may have small leak, in the v is common, water pump is a possible, or it may just be a weeping pipe join, there is a joint in the pipe to the heater that has been known to leak.

Where's the sensor for the coolant level ?

grimmy 23-06-14 10:34 AM

Sensor is in the bottom of the tank on the right hand side as you look at it.they can move a bit causing the light to come on but it is most likely the thermostat housing has a small leak I had a leak on my car and I couldn't see anything at first as the hot engine evaporated what leaked out I only saw the coolant in the v when it started to deteriorate.

I'll start it when cold and wait for the stat to open .. can't take any chances with this hot weather

i noticed with mine the light came on a few times,it was leaking from the small pipe, the one that goes back into the tank, jiggle valve i think its called, tightened it up and its been fine ever since

Here's a picture of the heater hose joint that is known to leak.
