Hub caps for Mk1 17" Straights

As the hub caps for Mk1 17" Straights are both rubbish and very hard to come by, I was wondering if anyone had ever replaced the badges with better ones.

As anyone with these wheels will know, the badges de-laminate very quickly and then look shabby. I've had new ones on back order from Rimmers for months now still with no sign of them.
I had new ones a few years ago, but they only lasted a year or two before the same thing happened.

While on the subject, the bonnet/boot MG badges de-laminate very quickly too, but at least you can still get replacements for those.

When I had my wheels refurbished in white, I threw the centre hub caps away and put in some VW ones instead. These will cover the hub nuts, but will leave the wheel nuts exposed, like this...

On my wifes ZR we fitted some from ebay with blue badges, they still look good a year later.

On my mk1 ZS I just left them off.

I used these I think...

You'll find that they are a little bit of a loose fit when you install them, I got around this by applying a thick bead of sealent inside the centre bore of the wheel and then inserting the centre cap.

It would definately be worth checking the diameter of the centre hub of your wheel if and before you buy these, I think it is around 66/67mm.

It sounds a bit of a bodge job but to be honest they look smart and with the silicone I haven't lost any yet!

I bought some MG domed wheel stickers to cover up the VW ones, and then finished it all off with a set of black/chrome wheel nut caps!

I did something similar too on a set of Kei force 10s that I refurbed at home with a rattle can.

Got some hub covers and glued on some MG resin stickers.

That's a smart job.

One bit of advice for the OP, I found that the domed stickers were a bit on the rigid side when I fitted them to the VW centre caps, a good way around this is to gently heat them with a hair dryer or heat gun.
