Bonnet vents
Is there any form of bonnet vent that would be practical for the 180 in terms of cooling?
I'm sure it's a subject broached before but is there anything difinitive? The BTCC styling would see a vent where the induction sits, would this achieve anything? What prevents water getting in? |
On my old Firenza I had louvres pressed into the bonnet, looked great but was a bit of a job getting it under the flypress ;) Water wasn't an issue, it dissipated the heat very well.

Funny, I was looking at this last night. Lots of discussion on.org, Other potion is bonnet raisers of course

This thread reminds me of a Simpsons episode... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAPmqX-FyvU (URL from memory, youtube doesn't work at work...)

personally i dont think the zs bonnet really suits vents unless perhaps this is for the track car where it would be functional, if the vents are louvred then rain shouldnt really get in while driving, just parked up is the issue and placement of the vents, i.e. over the engine then you risk h.t. leads getting wet, risk of misfires ect, unless you could have a motor that closes a flap when locked or when it rains |

Lots of cars and 4X4's have bonnet vents!! Water is'nt generally an issue ether. Touring cars often have large cold air intakes right at the front and they certainly don't splutter to a halt when it rains!! I'd have some kind of water trap just to be sure!!
Cooling vents are a good idea and would need nothing to stop water, as ingress when parked would be minimal and in motion hot air coming out stops water going in!! |
yeah that's the car I was thinking off
what ever happened to it? |

Yummy escort vents, I think they would suit the ZS quite well.

braIns just kIcked In
there was a guy on zs central who put escort style vents in a red mk2 a while ago looked quite good |

I did think about it once upon a time....... http://www.themgzs.co.uk/vb/showthread.php?t=9253

they're not gonna hurt but they aren't needed on a track zs with a nasp kv6, for the money it would cost to have it done well , you could do a mod that would give you some actual gain.
|
It wasn't a 'practical' plan for the track car. I really like the look of properly done vents, not the stuck on look. Like the BTCC ones liked above. I think on the black ZS mk2 it might look good.
|
many of the old gen btcc had half height rads (think the mg was one of them) and the grille was used primarily for air to the plenum.
The overheating problems they had were on the start finish if there were delays, the car was not design to idle (at 3,000rpm) stationary. But cooling wasn't an issue out on track due to velocity of air. The ZS on the other hand is a road going vehicle designed to sit in traffic. Cooling should not really be an issue on a nasp car like ^^^ said. Many people at the track lift the bonnets when they come in, I'm sure some do it only to show off the bling in the engine bay, but this will dissipate heat (and the ZS bonnet can catch fully upright), but a cooling down lap also helps with this and moreso the brakes. I never lift the bonnet, even after an hour or two solid on track, perhaps I should, but the engine has always been OK. Like you, I often run my car 3 people up with a car rest of 10mins per hour, it is a gruiler on the car but it takes it. |

I really like that.....

Sorry, I prefer a more subtle louvre. Not a fan of that. Looks too 'stuck on'?!

ooo000

Let's not forget some people want the looks and to be different and it not at all to do with gains. Not all of us are chasing seconds, it is more to do with having fun in a safe manner and keep our licences as clean as possible. Those that chase the times should be racing fulltime just like I did many years ago, it takes alot of money and alot of time, I gave up when my last child was born as I spent way too much time building, racing, maintaining and building again, it gets too much.
|
I just want it to look purty lol.
|
i'm not really a fan of bonnet vents on any car but if i was to pick any i would go for the louvres
|
MY thought was that on black it will be far less obvious (like the ones on the sides) so would be a subtle mode (unless I threw some LEDs behind them like I have the indicators!
|
ooooh i wouldnt go that far you might end up having strange tendancies like wearing your trousers inside your socks with your baseball cap slightly off centre and come out with strange comments like "safe bro" ;)
|
That outfit doesn't seem strange to me? As long as I have buckfast and a rolled up paper in my pocket!
|
lol whats buckfast? is that a scottish thing
|
Just googled buckfast. Might have to get me some :-) What's the rolled up paper for though?
|
You've always got to carry a rolled up paper, usually 'The Sun'. Not a clue why! But with all the pockets filled, they seem to think they can keep their hands warm inside the front of their pants!
