Is this my exhaust?
 

Hey guys

My ZS 120 has a rattling noise down at the rear of the car by the drivers side when I drive.

It is one of two things I think.

1. Exhaust
2. Brakes on rear drivers side

I think it is the exhaust, but my mate things it could be the calipers? Now can calipers cause a rattling type noise? I would have thought no.

Also if it is the exhaust, would that cause bad fuel economy or lack of power to the car at all?

What roughly would be the cost to repair either issue?

Better off getting it looked at by someone that knows what they are doing, no point in guessing at this stage, might be something silly causing it. Where are you based?

Im based in Stafford, near Stoke on Trent. Anyone know of a decent cheap garage in the area/local guy who can look at it.

I have just been out lunchtime and the rattling is getting worse.

I'm a total novice when it comes to car repairs/maintenance.

But I think I have ruled out the exhaust, as the rattling is still very evident as its quite warm and I had the window down, it's rattling virtually 100% of the time.

When I got back to my works car park I then parked up, put it in neutral and rev'd the engine not rattle at all.

I have a feeling it maybe the brake disc's being warped? Could this cause the rattling noise? Where the pads rub the disc the circle around the disc is not straight with the edge of the disc and has about 1cm of rough disc where the pad looks like it is not hitting the disc!

This is compared to the other discs, on the other wheels.

not whilst moving? getting worse?

brake disc dust shield touching the brake disc or probably a wheel bearing are my guesses without being there.......

like Stamford said though.......take it in to a garage to have them look at it and I'm sure they will find the problem quickly enough.

Pretty sure he could sort it out for you or at least tell you what the problem is its then your choice if you have him do the work or not

Have you tried lying on the floor and giving exhaust a thump with your hand - could be a load of rust inside it.

RSM? Got any more info?
