Winter tyres
 

Hi All

Was considering getting a set of winter tyres this year not not sure hom much of a difference they will make, has anyone put them on there Zed before and noticed a difference. I found the Zed a bit of a handfull last year in the cold weather. My friend works for National tyres and said he will fit a full set for £500. Dont really want to fork out all than money incases theres no difference.

Also was considering buying smaller wheels to put them on over the winter

Any thoughts ? :confused:

Winter tyres are generally a softer compound that will cope better in wet conditions. Be careful though because there are a load of cheap nasty tyres out there that will be mostly hopeless unless conditions are perfect for them.

I fitted a set of Barum Bravuris 2 (made by Continental) and noticed a huge improvement. They're actually quite quiet on the road too.

The car was damn near unstopable in the snow lol

Don't really see the point tbh,as far as I am aware they only really help in snowy conditions,on ice I guess they would slip just about the same as any tyre.probably wrong though as I am.sure someone will point out.

Did you put them on your standerd wheels or did you put smaller ones on ?

£500 is a lot for tyres...........

I do agree but i have a 2yr old and another on the way, so if it made a huge difference it would be worth every penny knowing the car would do what it was told in the icey weather

just the standard 17" wheels and at the same 32 psi all round that I normally run

What tyres have you been buying that are under £500 for a full set???? Even the Barums were £110 each... the Goodyear Eagle F1's I run the rest of the year are just under £1k a set! :blush:

Was wondering that myself but didnt want to ask, my Michelin Pilot's are usually about £160 - £170 each

In ice they will make little difference. Will be better in wet sludgy snow but not alot that will grip in ice other than spikes.

When I was last in Russia there was snow that was completely covering cars in places and they all had spiked tyres, could travel at 60mph with very little movement!

Not sure I'd bother with winter tyres in this country half the time we don't even have snow.

I have never bothered, just always bought a quality all purpose spec tyre. However if it is really bad I used the Land Rover ;)
