My new (ish) 180
Hi all,
Picked up this 180 about a month ago for a decent price to replace the my mk 1 180 that is now in the scrapyard in the sky! It's got 80k on the clock with a decent history and new ish clutch with sheddist kit which is a bonus. It's also got brembo calipers on all four corners and a full stainless exhaust; although the back box looks like it's for a hatch. Things done so far: Replaced ATC transistor pack (thanks Smokey) and removed the bodge switch override that only allowed the blower to be on full or off Replaced steering wheel (thanks tb steve) Upgraded to DAB head unit Replaced gearbox oil seals and put new oil in (garage job) Replaced air filter with green filters cotton Engie oil & filter change Still to do: Replace cloudy headlights with clear ones (thanks POMPSKI) Fit oil catch tank Get bodywork touched up Sort saggy bumper Get driver's bolster repaired Replace gear linkage bushes with poly kit Treat the small amount of surface rust underneath and underseal Upgrade rear windows to electric (thanks goldie), still need appropriate door cards though Get alloys refurbished Also the plenum looks a bit like the plastic is degrading (see pic) anyone else seen this? Comments/suggestions welcome. Overall I'm pretty pleased! great looking car, sounds like you have and will be busy.
Like the interior. :smile1::smile1::smile1: |
Interested to see the rear brembos as I want to convert mine to a two piston setup.
There's a big influx of XPG recently too! |
Glad to see another 180 being brought back to its best :-)
|
Looking good, sorry you didn't get to use my wheel.

A very close relation to our 180, we're KGK, I'll take a guess that the first owner was MGR.
When I converted to electric rear windows I kept the original door cards and opened the winder hole up slightly to accept an mgf tweeter, it looks oe. |

Looks sexy just have to love the grey ones

The 'sheddist' looks to be 'a.n. other' as the reservoir is different and in a different location to the aforementioned sheddist. Looks to be decent if the rest is the same standard. It'll be good to see the brake install mentioned.

Looks a beaut. Nice touch painting the fan guards red.

XPG saloons hummmm :)

I'm going to clean the brakes up a bit next weekend so will take some photos. |
Rear electric windows fitted
An update:
Fitted the rear electric windows kit from goldie today - all working as it should and looking smart. It appears that some ham fisted work has been done to the n/s/r door before as the interior handle was glued to the door card, apparently because the three clips that hold it to the door had been snapped off! Anyway had the replacement handle from goldie so after carefully freeing the old interior handle from the fabric with a stanley knife was all ok. There was also some similar sledgehammer work done to the centre console with a few clips snapped off but I've still got the console from my mk1 so in that went with the switches. As usual nothing is quite as simple as it should be with the zed but it's all part of being an MG owner and I love it :-D Tom |
Mon the XPG's :D
As pete as shown you can have a couplenof options apart from getting new door cards. His tweeter looks excellent, I went for chrome tap stoppers from B&Q inserted into the chrome bezels for the window winders that were surplus :) will get a pic in a tic |
I was lucky enough to find a mk1 in the scrapyard with them fitted as standard so no gaps for me :)

Nice car, would love to see some pics of the brakes, particularly the rears
|
Thanks for the replies and the pics pete & maxfly. I picked up a pair of TF tweeters from ebay for a couple of £ so I'll have a go at fitting them. Once the hole has been increased in size to accommodate the unit should be an easy fit.
I'll get some pictures of the brake setup sometime this week (probably the weekend) for those that are interested :) Tom |
Looking forward to the brake pics :)

Hi all,
It's been a while but this weekend I should be able to get down to doing some more work on the zed! Work on the new house had taken priority over the last couple of months but I'm ready to get my hands dirty again! Plan for this weekend is to replace rear hubs, discs and pads. The discs have seen better days and the bearings are LOUD at motorway speeds so I thought I'd replace the lot and clean up the caliper whilst I'm at it. I'll take some pictures for those that are interested in the brake setup. Any tips/things to watch out for? Also what type of grease is best for packing the bearings with? cheers Tom |
The bearings come pre greased as part of the hub assembly, so no greasing required.

So got around to changing the hubs, discs and pads; went pretty smoothly although the handbrake mechanism needed some tlc to prevent binding. I went for some mintex discs and pads from ebay so I'll see how they fare. No new shims with the pads so had to clean up the old ones and re-use not ideal but the car needed to be back on the road for Monday's commute!
The calipers (front and rear) appear to be brembo but they look the same as the Lucas OE ones to me. Anyone know if they were an option? New hubs made a huge difference at motorway speeds and fitting them myself allowed me to buy a new torque wrench :smile1: http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/...ps542b0649.jpg Picture of old near side looking pretty ropy! Forgot to take a picture of the new bits fitted... |
