My MK2 modified bumper

As some of you may have read ive been considering smoothing in the cupra splitter in to the mk2 bumper. So after a few very bad photoshops I thought id get the fiberglass out and give it a go, anyway heres the pics.

Trial fitting.

Splitter fitted and starting to fiberglass them together.

After some filler.
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j1...Photo-0027.jpg

Then alot of sanding and one basecoat.

Gazza 21-05-09 07:20 PM

It look's even better now it has been painted mate

TjP 21-05-09 07:27 PM

WOW!

Really nice mate... didnt think you could get such good finish when painting at home! Tempts me into respraying my door handle instead of waiting for a new one to show up on ebay! What kind of process and kit did you use?

Jay-ZS+ 21-05-09 07:36 PM

Well all the work in spraying is in the prep. As long as what you are spraying is smooth then your got a good chance the finish will be too.
I started off by sanding to right up to 600 grit
Then a coat of halfords plastic primer,
Then using a Devibiss Gti gun gave it about 3 coats of waterbased trophy blue lightly rubbing it back between coats with the 600 grit then the last coat I left and didnt rub back,
Then 2 coats of an 2k acrylic clearcoat,
Rubbed this back with 1500 grit and plenty of soapy water to flatten it off,
Buffed it up with 3M finishing compound then went over it with scratch X, Ive got a spray gun as I use it for work ( spraying furniture) and a cheap buffer,

But if your only spraying a door handle then you could get away with using cans and buffing it by hand just with the scratch X.

Worked a treat on this but then they were very very small scratches. Will really depend on the scratch believe scratch X will get out swirls but not sure about deeper scratches may have to build it up with a touch up pen first.

markyzs180 23-05-09 07:41 PM

erm, c'mon james..... pics lol

Jay-ZS+ 23-05-09 09:27 PM
