I see you like Subaru's. A mate of mine is after one but doesnt not what to go for! Hes got about ?8k to spend. Doesnt matter what age it is, as long as its looked after! What could he get for that?
Yeah love Subaru's

8k would get him something very nice. I'm only really into classics so depends what his cup of tea is. He could get a very rare / well looked after classic for 8k, something like a mint P1 or a an RB5 or a mint type R with some monies left over to play with. Or if he fancied it just a very nice normal 4 door wrx sti classic.

For newage cars (anything not a classic) he could get a very nice blobeye, could probably get a very nice JDM sti twin scroll one for 8k (forged engines). Or a very nice uk blobeye sti.

8k would also pick up the latest shape before they brought the hatch in which is the 'hawkeye' wrx, wouldn't be able to get an sti for that money though.

Loads of options, do tell him to make sure whatever he buys has a lot of history with it / evidence of oil changes etc. They need to be looked after to be reliable, oil should be changed every 5k regardless. Most hardcore enthusiast do it every 3.5k. Make sure whatever he buys has always been ran on 99 octane fuel, especially if it's an import as they aren't mapped for normal UK fuel (95 ron). Cam carrier gaskets are prone to leaking so can cause smoke, a lot of people think this can be turbo failure but it isn't. It's actually a small / cheap job to fix so don't be too put off if he see's this as it's a common fault on the boxer engine.

Obviously look out for normal tell tale sells, interiors are prone to wear as most Japanese cars are. The least previous owners possible is also a good shout and I would buy from an enthusiast again, scoobynet is probably the best site. Also buy a standard one so it hasn't been fettle with too much.

MAF failure is also a common fault which can cause a dodgy idle, again a cheap fix though.

Good luck
