I would also check the clutch actuation and biting point. Do a visual check on the slave cylinder and its mounting bracket. If a mk2 check the condition of the underside for corrosion which is mostly the fuel tank, or indeed if the previous owner has treated it. If they refuse to budge on price assuming there is no evidence of a belt change walk away as their word for it is worthless unless they are offering a no quibble warranty for at least 12 months or covering the period until the next change is due. No chance in hell that will happen but worth it for the response you will get! ?500 is alot money and dictates a sale or not, if it lets go then it'll be a few hundred for another engine.
