I made a modification to mine - drilled two holes top and bottom at the rear of the handle, radiused them and then self tappered the handle to the door skin itself behind the handle. I then filled over the heads and resprayed the handle.

Ok - i'll not be able to remove the handle without digging the screws out but (1) I shouldn't have to remove the handle again (easy enough to repeat the process if I did have to ) and (2) this repair is far, far stronger than anything you can bodge to the brass collar on its own.

Single point fixing is the weakness as its at the point where the most force is applied when the handle is used - my handle is now fixed in 3 places at that point and its SOLID.

Whilst you're at it, I'd recommend something else too - remove the door card(s) and get yourself some decent penetrating oil with PTFE or graphite additive (which remains to do the job long after the oil has left town). Apply it copiously to the lock mechanism, the actuating rods, lock button pivot point and the lock pin surround on the doorcard itself - and make sure everything gets open/closed repeatedly until its all smooth as silk. Re-assemble.

I found a major problem was that because the mechanism was sticky/restricted that it wasnt fully disengaging - this resulted in the lock failing to open correctly and only half opening, so the door when pulled (by the handle) didnt release the keep and jammed half open...and left you pulling hard on a weak handle on a jammed door..... you can guess the rest....
