But, if are are going to build a car to track/race standard, part seam welded, roll cage etc,

then, there is a project that is well worth taking on, I think its still available (not mine) and is a stripped shell with cage and pickups on front turrets etc and a whole host of spares, basically a car or two.
Yes, you would need to build it and no you prob wouldn't be in it for don if your doing it in your spare time, but it is really cheap for what it is and is a great base for any race car.

aside from that, the MK2 has the advantage of the 7.5j rims and capacity to run 9's under the bodykit with a bit of fettling.
One of the mk1 race cars has already been mk2'd with the bodykit/bumpers etc.
The mk2 front bumper has better aero than the mk1.
Not only this, but you can pick up a mk2 for less than a grand these days...
