Sorry Mat, but one word still keeps coming back to me here 'diesel'.............I know you hate them with a passion, but why? Have you actually driven a decent one on a good, hard long run? I was of the opinion that diesels were horrid, but having owned three HDi's I can't fault them. I have a friend who is on his fourth VW, his first a Golf TDi, 6 speed and 160bhp went like stink and returned 60mpg!
Try one, you may be surprised.
My brother-in-law has the BMW 330d and that is something else, packing around 230bhp.
