I've got a Mk1 hatch and the rear MG badge definately has two locating pins also holding it on. Think they're more for lining it up though. Best way to remove, i found, was to use dental floss to cut through the sticky tape holding it on.
If your thinking of replacing the rear badge with a non OE one, bear in mind that the new one wont fit flush without the curved plastic surround.
