Yes of course this is a common misconception about clay:
If you do not use plenty of lube on the clay and bodywork of the car. then you are effectivly DRAGGING it across your cars paintwork.
Its not the clay that will damage although it will leave clay residue on it which is a pig to remove, its the contaminants that it has picked up and you are dragging across your DRY paintwork.
I shall leave that to your imagination what sharp contaminants + dry paintwork =
