The site owner, Stamford, very kindly created a couple of ZS buying guides, and it explains a whole lot about what to look for when buying a ZS, beit 120 or 180.

Part 1
Part 2 (Look especially under Recommendations section for the VIS issues)
Part 3

Simply put, if the VIS fail, it is more of an annoyance than a problem, hence why there are kits available to see if your VIS are behaving themselves as the car will still work fine without them.
They are straight forward to repair if they need it. They do however control the plenum butterfly valves, and these can be expensive to replace (as you need to replace the entire plenum chamber). A DIY fix is in the process of being produced, but isnt ready yet. But even if the VIS AND the butterfly valves fail, you will still be able to use the car, it will just be a bit down on power but still perfectly driveable.

The only real issues affecting the 180 (that I can think of right now, at least) are the clutch mechanics failing and the cam belt replacement service. So, look for a car which has had its cambelts replaced (most of them due to be done by now) and preferably with the sheddist clutch kit!
