It's a torque sensing differential that will ensure maximum traction is applied to any surface. The diff senses the rotational difference between the left and right drive shafts and limits one, i.e. if turning right the left wheel will be rotating more than the right one, this will supply biased traction to both.

This is for a type 2, but the same except fir the gear design. http://www.torsen.com/files/Torsen%2...al%20Sheet.pdf

Depends on their hourly rate and level of competence. Dave will know the time to take to swap them over as I haven't dropped mine yet. It's coming up as the clutch is showing signs of slippage.

The torsen A was used on the earlier PG1 box but they are not as strong as the type b and have a habit of shearing.

There is a school of thought, however, that says the type a is a better diff, that is until it fails.

TBH I wouldn't try a local garage to do the work unless they are experienced in the PG1, I've heard too many horror stories, Rally Matt has a very good reputation and his prices are resonable. Alternativly there is lots of info on www.rovertech.net

I've managed to distroy both, but it is generally agreed that the type A is a bit more fragile. In a road car it should be fine as it will never see the same abuse as it would on a track.

Fitting is a bit of a pain. Both time I changed mine the gearbox had to come out - which isn't an easy task without a proper ramp.

I agree someone who has done it before, like rally matt, would be ideal but more than likely expensive - and it's not the sort of job you'd want to trust to any old garage

it is a fantastic bit of kit if you do buy it. It totally changes how the car performs in the twisty bits

As has been said above really.
It will transform the drive of a 180.
Might be worth asking a few local gearbox specialists how much they would charge.

The A type is know for being weaker on the outer housing than the B type. But I think this is largley down to the fact that the std rover boxes are fitted with weak plastic caged bearings that wear and collapse over time, which puts more strain/loadings on the diff itself.

As this diff is brand new and well supported with new steel cage bearings you would have serious trouble trying to get this one to fail even in a turbod car. With the torque levels and power delivery of the 180 I dont think it would ever fail tbh.
I know of one in a 8v maestro turbo trackcar with around 280bhp+ (which engine is sat in my garage now ) that was fitted with 2nd hand A type and had years of thrashing on trackdays and didnt sheer. So as long as the diff bearings arent shot they do last!
