ZS 120 or 115
Evening all,
Im on the lookout for a ZS 115 or 120. Ideally i would like a Mk2 hatchback with the 180 kit - but i know how bloody rare they are, let alone with a diesel engine.
I am open to suggestions on other models but i cannot afford a 180 insurance wise so those are out of the question.
Cheers
Andy

the 110 120 are good revvy engines, just need to bear in mind hgf can be a problem with the petrols, but if you put ?400 away that would sort it if it did go, mine is on 76,000 with a lot of hard driving and coolant is spotless, as long as the cooling system is good shouldnt have any trouble
diesels are good and can get good mpg and obvios remaps ect, its not the most refined engine but it is fairly reliable and can return good mpg

Hi m8 from experience the diesel is not much cheaper to insure than a 180 but fuel consumption is a lot worse lol

I've got a 115, road tax ?125 a year, ins about ?280, my one goes well. Dont think you get as many problems with the L series derv engine, as you do with the K series.
Had it for two and a half years and touch wood, no serious problems, apart from rusty rear sliders on the o/s/r, which needed new disks and pads to sort out.
Best bet, would be to go out for a drive in both cars and see what you like. Its a different way of driving the derv, as they pull all the way through the rev range. With a petrol engine its all revs to get the speed.
Hope you find something you will enjoy.

actually my Derv is a lot cheaper to insure than a 180 - when it was standard anyways.... is only grp 10..... in recent times there may not be much in it as all policies seem to have been loaded against MGR
Go for a drive in both and see, the 40-45mpg average with upto 55-60 being possible if you drive like miss daisy, but make sure that they are good examples of both first.
A few tweaks to the derv for very little money will make it a much 'faster' car and also a lot more relaxing to drive, i rarely need to stir the box from 40 mph onwards to make good progress....

Forgot to mention a budget of up to 2.5k, maybe abit more for the perfect example.
180 is ruled out because its ?400 a year more on insurance than a TD, 120, more tax (i think) and would cost me alot more in petrol.
110 is ruled out because i have a modified 1.6 fitted to my 114 GTa, i think it would be pretty poor in a car that weights alot more (no offense intended to 110 owners)
Im after something for a daily, something comfortable that will return good MPG (get about 31-32 combined on the GTa) and with enough space for passengers and family in the future
Cheers

you might struggle to get that much in the 2500 range for the ZS derv.. they do hold their value better.... only if buying from a stealer... pistonheads has a few well within buget.. seems price has dropped quite a bit recently!
but you could get a bargain if a MAF is faulty or an IC pipe has split and the owner doesn't know the easy fix
also dont be put off by 100K+ miles on the L-series, the engine is good for at least 200k usually!

Yeah i found that when looking at ZR's too.
I think i am being too picky with respect to what my budget is, havnt really been to view any ZS's yet but ive got a few weeks til the GTa needs to come off the road
