Central Locking

hey guys, is it just me, or is the ZS's remote central locking range appalling? I have to basically be right at the drivers door to open it. Which is abit annoying when i want to enter the boot!
Is anyone else suffering the same? I've tried replacing the fob battery but no joy. My friend has suggested that it may be infa red used in the ZSs rather than radio waves. Is this correct?

I'm stongly considering replacing my current central locking with a 3rd party box, (such as one from www.rclick.co.uk) as I have personally installed these systems in my last two cars. (a renault megane mk1, and a fiat bravo). My only concern is that this car has an alarm and my previous motors never did. Should hopefully be able to get the new unit to send the right signals to talk to the existing unit. Or maybe it'd be easier to disable the alarm permanently.

What are your thoughts on this?

i think it's to do where the receiver is located, some of them are just dumped in the car and not located very well making the range worse than others.

Mine's the same. I click it while approaching from about 20m but it rarely opens until Im at the drivers door. I thought mine was a dead battery too but changing it made zero differnce

I agree it can be very annoying indeed.

i know what you all mean, they dont have a very good range, but, why do you need it???? you can only get in the car when you open the door anyway !!!! (if you see what i mean) you cant get in it from 10 ft away can you???

Opening it up from 20m is fine if you want some oike to get in and nick your stuff before you can drag your fat arse from the direction of McD, Subway or Starbucks! .

The problems identified by a member of metropower is two fold.

The areial lead is about half the length is should be and it is buried in the main part of the loom behind the dash. I assume it is the same as the Rover 100.

However I understand the short range was deliberate, so you were close to the car to operate the locking.

You can open the boot on the MK1 saloon with the key without using the remote.

I wouldn't even consider trying to remove the alarm, it is intergrated into the car ECUs etc, however I think if you insist on overriding it you can do it through software but you best tell your insurance company as the car will no longer be as secure.
