LPG conversion kit

Went to a scrap yard today, rare treat as I usually don't have time to wipe my arse properly. They had a firefrost Mk2 180 that I had the parking sensors off, a bit of bodykit I needed, front MG rubber mats, gear knob, cup holder, exhaust heat shield, number plate lamps and the service book. All that cost me £27.

This car had an LPG conversion done. I asked the chap how much he'd want if I took it out and he said £50. I left it but im tempted to go back. I want to know is this worth it. I know it sounds cheap but would I be able to fit this myself or should I take it to a specialist to be done? they may not want to touch it if its second hand so could end up with something useless.

No idea really but I'd personally only get it done by a pro. When it came to resale time, I think it'd be hard to move on. A buyer would look for certification.

Let's face it, if you went to buy one with LPG and the guy told you he'd done it himself with parts from a scrappie .....

Good work on the parts - bargain. Why was it being broken ?

There are plenty of DIY conversions out there, often to a better level than many of the pro installs. You can get DIY installs certidied for between £50 and £100 but it isn't a legal requirment.

Assuming that the main components are in good condition there is no reason not to swap it, the tanks have a 10 year life span.

There are several friendly pros at www.lpgforum.co.uk if you want advice about fitting.

At that price I'm tempted to pay you to strip it out for me. Pmail me if you are interested.

Personally, if your removing it and have the time, fit it yourself because as Haynes says refitting is reverse of removal and as James says if you really wanted you could get it checked over to be safe.

i think i will go back and have a go at removing it. thanks for helping me make up my mind.

i may also get a few other bits if the guys prices are as reasonable. see what he wants for the inlet manifold and throttle body. i may even be able to convince him its part of the conversion kit.

looks like a rear end but the boot still opened fine, unlike mine after it was rear ended. so must have been low speed. i have the rear bumper in my boot as there was no way i was pulling the rear spat off when it was minus temperature. thats how i ended up with the exhaust heat sheild, sensors and number plate lamps. i also removed the loom and parking ECU for good measure.

The LPG injectors will be drilled into the inlet somewhere so are defiantly part of the conversion so if you remove it with the throttle attached.......

just had a lpg kit fitted to one of mine have a lpg kit on the 180 want to put it on another 180 so asked him if he would do it was happy to do it so song as it was not ripped out £350 ish but then can go on your log book ect save you £10.00 a year car tax i get 26 mpg if i am good on the gas at £0.59 per liter so wont take you long to get your money back if you do a few miles hope this helps you

Made a start today on removing the under bonnet stuff. Theres a hell of a lot to these kits. I didn't realise it was plumbed into the cooling system. Managed to get all the hardware out. Need to go back later in the week to get the donut tank out the spare wheel well and the wiring that goes underneath. The car is on the ground so they'll lift it up so I can put it on axle stands and remove the last few bits. Also removed the centre console, ECU/BCU and 2 fobs (just in case) breathers (always handy to have some spare).

When it comes to fitting it, C14URD (Clive), had an LPG'd 180 where the filler was located behind the reg plate on a hinge. Looked far better than drilling an extra hole in the side of the car by the petrol filler.
