I'd decide what exactly you want to do first, research the engine options, set yourself some targets and then start buying parts.
Have a word with AMW motorsports (they have a website and are on facebook) they do all sorts although I have no direct experience of them myself, I've never heard a bad thing about them.
An old friend had a 1.8vvc transplanted into a 1.4 rover 45 and the work seemed good.
