Peter has already covered most the points; and you know of the trial and tribulations of going further on the build thread for me .....
Either way that said, the MAF sensor is the main weak point, roverron no longer does a MAF, but we can get pierburg replacements ow with the IAT for less than an OE Bosch MAF, .org has a few threads with cars that use the same sensor number, so you can just buy the new vauxuall or alfa housing and switch the maf into ours.
Other thing to go is the Intercooler hoses. it is not a case of if, but when. OE ones are about ?40 per pipe prob a bit more now that VAT is higher.
I think there is a thread that stamford wrote up from some info i gave him..... but really i would say ave a read of the derv section on .org (as i know you are on the forum anyways).
other than the engine itself all the same issues are there that would affect the 180, eg rust patches and blocked drains etc...

Id get to eating bread and cheese,,,,,,,,,,,,,stale bread and next doors old cheese before I gave up my 180. Its the only thing that keeps me sane. Student riots, immigrants, muslim bombers, football!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just make myself a cup of coffee and go for a drive......Better than beer and/or sex!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come on, lets no get depressed, 2011 may be tight, but with a ZS in your fleet, nothing can be too bad. And we got the forum, so we all got friends.
I feel better already, wheres my car keys?

be nice to say that mate
with petrol nearing ?1.30 a litre its going to cost me at least ?20 to take it out around the block.... When your only earning min wage and having to fork out stoopid amounts on bills that ?20 id rather spend on something else
As ive said in another thread im just going to get an old ?500 banger with an mot ticket on and some tax and just thrash it around.......be nice to just walk up to a car and just belt it one with a hammer and not give a fook where as with my ZS i feel i have to wrap it up in cotton wool and that paranoia isnt for me no more
In Time hopefully i can go out and buy another but most likely not ive owned MG/Rover since i passed my test and i fancy a change
RIP Rover Ownership

diesel
Ive only just bought a zs diesel mk2 as the crazy insurance price for the 180 and high fuel price i decided it was getting silly puttin ?250 of fuel in the 180 every month so got the diesel which has been fittin with a chip express tuning box k&n pannel filter rear sports box and boost adjusted to 19psi run around 145 bhp and i get 40mpg round town and see 47/50 on a run which means im now spendin ?120 on diesel a month along with the saving on insurance im better off by ?160 a month

if i were doing that kind of mileage i wouldnt have a 180. mon~fri i only do about 8 miles a day, weekends maybe a little more and i'm probably filling up once every 2 1/2 to 3 weeks.
i wouldnt go from a 180 to an old banger either, false economy.

To be honest, the fuel economy I get from my 180 isnt much worse than what I got from my old 1.6 escort, so buying an old petrol banger really isnt worth it.
A diesel banger would be the way forward, probably traditional TDi rather than TDCi engines as theres less to go wrong. Would greatly depend on the mileage you do as to whether you would offset the purchasing price in fuel consumption alone.
