My immobiliser does that intermittently, it will crank but won't fire.

OK who knows know the immobiliser work.. What does it stop? Ignition? Fuel pump? ..Cuz I've had the injectors out and they not injecting .. When I turn the key I can hear the pump priming then first turn I get fuel (explains the almost firing) but then nothing ... Is this defo immobiliser or could it be something else

If it's immobilized it won't turn over, it'll just make the beeping noise.

So it primes which gives you enough fuel to fire then no fuel !, odd one, how much fuel is in the tank?.

It does sound like the immoboliser.
Battery may also be low causing the locking problems.
Until you get it starting just lock the car with the key in the door.

Which ECU are you running?

To check fuel can you jump a fused wire from the battery to the fuel pump?
(If it is an early mk1 there is a cover under the boot to acess the pump).
