is the '69' so that it reads the same when upside down?

Actually - Yes - but as they put it on the bonnet it's not really the same as putting it on the door !

An old boss of mine used to race in the budget rent-a-car series many years ago and throughout his racing life his number was 111 purely for that reason! Don't think he ever did use it in that manner!
