Displaying Tax Discs

I have been notified, and confirmed it with the police, that owners can be fined and given points for displaying an out of date official tax disc - this is despite the fact discs have been abolished.

It's unclear if this is a result it being Deemed to block vision (unlikely) or because outdated tax laws still exist.

Its also in a few car magazines this week, such as Practical Classics.

Regardless, I recommend you remove your old disc immediately.

The law of displaying an out of date tax disc still stands dispite tax discs being abolished. It's illegal because you are displaying an out of date marker just like when you could order tax in the post and have tax on the system you still couldn't drive on an expired disc. As far as a Bobby on the beat knows the car has no tax upon inspection.

Seems a bit stupid to not change the law on that point, but I need to take mine out then... left them where they were!

Thanks for the heads up.

When you posted this on facebook I did a bit of a search and couldn't find anything.
I would love to know the rational behind this.

Someone one Facebook said its something to do with your not allowed have any stickers or the like in your windscreen for the MOT. The tax disc was only an exception as it was a legal requirement but as it's now abolished it's seen as an obstruction in your view. Anybody know of this? Although same could be said for the likes of L-plates and service stickers?

How can something sited in the bottom left hand corner be an obstruction? If that was the case then all the stickers down that side of the screen would be deemed illegal, such as places visited, AA etc.

You shouldn't have anything in the swept area of the front screen and clear vision through the front side windows.

The exemption used to be the tax disc but as there is now no paper disc is issued or displayed so I guess they regard the old disc as just an obstruction.

They say the swept area as it is easy to define.
