If you want the perfect finish your probably best of taking it to a body shop?

Can't really afford a body shop bill but I have a mate who is a painter at the base I work on who will help with the spraying but it was mentioned about primers to get the right effect

Just get it done properly, a pro front bumper respray should only costs between 80-150. You'll spend a good chunk of that on supplied to do it properly yourself.
