On vehicles that are imported into the UK...... the car gets an age related reg letter.. BUT the year of import and thus registration is on the log book
so..... say a 1997 car imported into the UK in 2001 would get a number plate such as this.. ABC123R..... but on the log book it would say registered in 2001.... I cant remember what else it says on the log book as its a while since I sold the Scooby

Cars with no proof of year of origin are 'Q' plated once SVA'd afaik. To get around tax groups the donor car will need to be a low group in order to use this as a base for adding a bigger, later engine spec. Or make a car from an unregistered chassis and register it as a Q car by not using a current V5. I'm only guessing here.

Imported cars have both proof of origin and proof of manufactured year..... or you simply cannot import them...This was tightened up when it was discovered a lot of stolen Jap 4X4s mainly, were coming in via Saudi
