There doesnt look to be much in it going by the specs found here
GTO628
GTO6537

So it depends where they're going. They're too big for the hatch rear speakers, which means that its either for the front or the saloon rear. If its the saloon rear then Id get the GTO6537s because they're a tenner cheaper and you wont hear any difference at the rear.
If its for the front (saloon or hatch) then Id go for the GTO628 has they're ~7mm shallower and the front speakers are quite restrictive with depth.

Do like you said, stick em in the rear parcel shelf and buy yourself some components at some point in the future for the front ones.
Are they being run from a headunit or an amp? If from the headunit, ford escort rear speaker adaptor cables will fit between the mg rover OEM rear speaker wiring loom and the new speakers, so you dont need to do any cutting or soldering. You can get them on ebay here

Edit: I just saw your other post, where you say you have a hatch.
You have other options then, try and sell on the GTO268s at a loss on ebay, keep them yourself for some point in the future where you might want them, fit them as is and dont worry about the tweeters or try and separate out the tweeters from the speakers you have.
Id be tempted to do the latter, but it will require a bit of rewiring and soldering.
