bmw 118d or 120d, if not big enough, the 318d/320d.

excellent economy, no injector issues like its german lower class rivals and they just happen to be pretty quick also.

They snap timing chains though........irrespective of mileage or service history, and the timing chain is at the back of the engine

Unfortunately BMW and audi off the table, I've owned both makes before and although impressed it's not worth the age and the mileage for one that's less than 5 grand. The astra is very tempting and will look at seats. The fabia looks like a good option, even the non vrs newer version like an 07 plate. I will mostly like remap it as I've done this in the past and can vouch mpg goes up as well as the fun factor. Keep the suggestions coming this is great help, thanks everyone.

true, but I don't think his 5k budget will get him into a BMW with that engine, your safe up to 2008, it was 08 on that suffered this prob.

I never used to like fabias, thought they looked "droopy" at the back, as if the lights are too low and, well, just a bit awkward looking.

However, when done right they can look pretty good. Octavia VRS diesel hatch is another you could consider, 170 bhp standard!

If you fancy a modded VRS Fabia, this one caught my eye http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic...-55-plate-86k/

Lol looks like someone has made a lot of effort with that thing but up north you don't lower cars as we love speed bumps and pot holes!
