Whining air con

My car whines when the air con is turned on and instantly stops when its turned of any idea what could cause this?

its really annoying isnt it.

someone at work said there 75 used to do it and it was a bearing in the compressor but he does talk alot of crap

I often have a whining sound from the passenger side.

It usually sounds like 'slow down' or 'did you have to take the corner that fast', not sure its the air con though

Take it you mean it only happens when the actual air con is on and not when your running 'econ' when it is off and just have the fans on? could well be a bearing i suppose, would a regas and oil help that sort of thing??

yeah its only doing it when the air cons on.

im not sure as i only repaired the system last week as it had a leacky pipe was fine timm yesterday

Yes mine does it too and only when the aircon kicks in and not on econ mode. Don't quote me but I think I noticed the whine after my cam belt change.

to see if it is the main pulley on the compressor, try spraying a bit of wd-40 on it while runing and see if the whining stops
