http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/int/news...iness-11969958.

Saw this on news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We shouldnt be forced to change tyres, use brains instead. I cant afford 4 new wheels and tyres for my ZS!!!!!!

Does anyone make a winter 205/45-17?

Yeah I saw that as well.
Pirelli said that winter tyres should be a legal requirement in the UK so that we are in line with the rest of Europe.

When I lived in Germany, everyone used winter tyres fitted to steel wheels, I don't think the weather we get in most areas of the UK justifies the expense.

regardless of the storage issues etc, i think if we keep getting repeat snow falls ovr the autumn\winter, and you do lots of miles during that time, then you ought to get a set of winter tyres.

I really thought about it this year, but so far bristol has not been bad enough to need them at all.

The real challenge would be for those with the brembodge setup or similar how to get a smaller wheel in order to fit the tyre, as i did not think winter tyres came in the OE profile..... tho i can't say i have looked in too much detail.

Phate is an unknown quantity at this point
I think it should be a requirement IF you do a certain amount of miles during this weather, they make an enormous difference, yes its possible to get around without them if you have a bit of savvy but look at the amount of drivers that simply don't

It's not as daft as it sounds as the global warming has had an effect on the climate in the last couple of years, so does warrant some changes to our driving habits. For this to work the winter specification tyre must be an exact match in dimensions to the 'all season' type fitted when built.

As said storage and cost is an issue. Before such a thing can be implemented the insurers must see this as a zero effect change on a given insurance policy. The premiums should stay the same as long as the right tyre specification is fitted during the specified season dates. In the event of an accident if they find the wrong tyre is fitted then the owner is liable as he did not take reasonable care to ensure his vehicle was properly equipped etc.

A sound idea but I reckon it take another 10 years at least to make such a change so as to monitor the weather changes during winter and also the data from the AA/RAC and insurers to see the amount of breakdowns and accidents attributed to the change in weather conditions etc.

If we are to have winter tyres fitted, then PLEASE PLEASE lets do something about the cretins who take no notice of all the other bad weather we have. Walked to work today in the fog and counted 21 people with no lights on, 6 with just side lights. Not forgetting the 7 who only scrapped the ice of the windscreen on their side of the car!!!!!!!!! So EU before you force us to drive on winter tyres for our safety, teach the NUMPTYS common sence !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
