My coupe turbo

Hey guys. Thought I'd start up a project thread of my coupe turbo.
Got many plans for the coupe turbo. Started off as a bog standard coupe turbo FDH purchased back in Aug 2006. I travelled down to High Wycombe after a friend sent me a link of the car on ebay. Spoke to the owner about it and knew straight away this was the one to get. Such a gentleman he was. 69 year old guy had it since new but it was time for him to part with it. The guy is still in contact with me always asking how I'm getting along and the motor too.

Car has had a few problems in the last couple of years. Mainly little things that kept going wrong. My car seems to like to chew crank sensors! I've been through 3 in the last 2 years. On a 4th one currently. Rotar arms as well and CTS. With the help of the local Rover community, managed to get the car on the road in time for Longbridge. It had been a long time since I had enjoyed driving my car and it drives pretty sweetly right now apart from the boost issue! Managed to get to Longbridge and back without requiring the breakdown cover this time unlike last year!

Car currently has an oil leak from the rear main crank seal. Which coupe turbo doesn't?! Has a slight exhaust blow as well. Can't get the car to boost right. Still doesn't hold boost as well as it should and tails off quite early as well. I'm wondering if it's the actuator at fault.

Car recently has had a full service and is running much better then it was. It seems to be a lot smoother now whereas before it was a bit lumpy, especially on idle. It passed it's MOT earlier this year as well nicely. Just an advisory on the abs sensors on the back. Thermostat sorted as well with new one as old one didn't want to warm up. Just sat on cold the whole time. New expansion bottle as well as old one was leaking slightly.

Current spec of my car can be found here. A fair bit done to it since I have had her. More recent pics from Longbridge this year below and outside a chippie!

Anyway, some big plans in progress by a respectable member on here who is helping out with the engine build.

Plan is to go down the M series/O series route. Bought some ) series pistons late last year but these turned out to be scrap along with a bottom end.
A pm to Drew got me sorted with some custom Forge pistons from JE to the same spec as the O series pistons. Look very nice! Also managed to get my hands on some M series rods.
Bought a few other parts for the build. New oil pump, both bottom and top gaskets, new bolts. Still plenty more to get though.
I also have a brand new t16 head as well with bigger exhaust valves but this will be a project for next year. I am currently replacing my head with a refurbed one by my engine builder as I suspect I do have the sticking valves syndrome. This year is to get the full engine rebuilt along with the stronger bottom end and then this winter I want to get the bodywork sorted as it is starting to deteriorate.

I'm aiming for about 350bhp as I think this will be plenty for a fwd Rover. I currently estimate it's probably running 220-230bhp. It seems quite nice as it is. I did start to have doubts about the engine build since mine is running so nice now but I want more power! I do want to keep the car road worthy and not turn it into a track slag. Just a nice car to enjoy at the weekends.
It's actually starting to feel a bit slow now

So the aim for this year is:

Get the new engine in once all built up. Hopefully within the next few months.
Strip the entire interior and engine loom and start from scratch as I have had so many electrical problems with teh car, it's unreal. Mainly due to gadgets added by the previous owner. As nice as they are, they have caused me nothing but problems.

I want to get the car fully polybushed as well soon to improve the handling as I'm still not happy with the way it handles. Mind you, the fooked front Koni shock won't be helping things so two new front shocks on order.

Bigger 4 pot brakes. Already in the pipeline. Just waiting for confirmation and they will be getting snapped up. I think bigger brakes are essential as I'm getting quite a lot of fade with the current 282 set up. Especially as I am aiming for bigger power.

Want to get the bodywork completely sorted and a full respray. Already started buying a few new exterior parts. I'll be buying a lot of parts over the next few months. New wings, bonnet, splitters, bolts and nuts, spoiler, bootlid, going the whole way. Want this coupe absolutely mint again as it was when I first got her.

Anyway just a few pics below. Not many pics but you get the idea.

Loads of work you have planned, makes me feel wimpy worrying about taking my side skirt off and sorting.

Car looks smart as is.

Best of luck with the build, be interesting to see your progress.

Thumbs up

I have never owned a 220 turbo, but really like them. Looks like you have a couple of headturners in your pics. Good luck with the project, be interesting to see how she develops.

Cheers people. Just got sent some more pics of engine build so will get them up shortly.

Also going phase 1 grille instead of the one I currently have. I like the look of the older one better. Here's a pic of the older one but I am getting the RS grille on the front.

Obviously my Jap plinth will be in place.
