Just goes to show, a tuned derv isn't something to dismiss quite so easily.

Baring 1 or 2 on here, i would imagine most haven't driven a tuned L series derv, so really going on hearsay.

If you get to drive one in anger, i am sure you'll be rather suprised just how well they do go.
A 180 will most likely beat a tuned derv on a drag strip, but how many times do you drive like that in real life?

Cheers
Dave

wouldnt it be more fair to compare a tuned 180 to a tuned derv.
modern diesels have come so far since the old lump in the zs, some new diesels even in bog standard factory spec, would rip any model of zs a new one, tuned or not.

No, then the performances wouldn't be so similar.

I'm not wanting this to turn into which car is better etc, just the fact i didn't find the 180 i drove, was convincing enough to want to immediately change to one.

If i had a 1.8 ZS, then i would be immediately changing to a 180!!!

A tuned 180 wouldn't be in the same ball park as my tuned derv, then obviously the choice would be a little easier i would have said.

All this is, is just my observation following a drive of a 180.

Cheers
Dave

I'm beginning to regret the whole - my 180 would beat any tuned diesel Zs - post a bit. In my view it is true, but the rationale for the post wasn't to actually challenge anyone and come over boy racer.... My apologies if it was taken that way.

My comment was made because of my complete inability to understand why anyone would choose a diesel over a petrol for any reason other than fuel efficiency.... I absolutely know that a tuned diesel goes well. Ofcourse it does ! Any car weighing the same as a ZS with 150 bhp will go well. 150bhp was GTi performance not so long ago !

Even modern cars and modern diesels. There is no arguement to buy a diesel over it's petrol equivalent in any respect other than saving money. They are noisier - more costly to buy initially - and only offer savings as a result if you do big miles.

So - if economy is important and you do big miles and want lower fuel costs - buy a diesel and tune it. If it isn't - get a 180....

There aren't many diesels modern or otherwise fitted into a comparable car that will keep with the 180. I looked long and hard before getting the GTC.
With the ZS180 it's the whole package that works together not just the engine. It is a great car even if it is a little long in the tooth now.

Haha.. Well before we sound like we were "racing along" we were driving enthusiastically when road conditions allowed but all the same when we did start stretching their legs you didnt fall back too much. Next time Pete you should try maybe a quarter more throttle and see how we all go.

I know what Dan meant though, not meant in a drag racing way although may be fun for a group session at a rwyb day to see how some compare but I too unless really needed to save costs would stick with a 180 as suits the way we drive and what I want from the car.!
