The add has put me off already to be fair but...

last service?
belts being an unknown isn't good
dents on roof...is the paint broken/rust?
decent tyres (considering winter is here)?
plenum rattle?
vis motors working?
has it been written off (roof damage could do that)?

Plenty to consider anyway

Plenty of things to check first

Cheers for this .... I'd follow the FAQ
I would replace the belts as he has no evidence of them being done .... so how much should I budget for the belts doing @ a competent garage?

My local MGR dealer want £950 for the belts only (no oil or other service items)

However I hear other "non Main dealers" charge from £350 upwards...

Lot depends on where in the country you are ... best thing would be to make some calles to places near you for a quote.

Round me it's £600....

http://lates600.com has a good reputation and is £600... But IIRC that includes a full service at the same time.

Oh and the £950 I was quoted from Seward apparently does not include tensioner or water pump... which are both recommended to be done at the same time!!

£500 is the lowest you should budget for a belt change. Take someone along who knows these cars, much better than taking a risk and buying a lemon.
