BTCC Croft Crash update

Following the multi-car accident during qualifying for Round 13 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Croft, three drivers were taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough for further treatment.

We can confirm that;

Aron Taylor-Smith (#40 MG Racing RCIB Insurance) suffered a fracture to his left leg and concussion. He was closely monitored in hospital and was released late last night.

Luke Davenport (#300 Team Shredded Wheat Racing with Duo) is currently in intensive care in an induced coma, and is in a serious but stable condition, with multiple chest injuries, lung damage, broken right leg, broken pelvis, broken right arm and concussion.

Jeff Smith (#55 Eurotech Racing) is currently in intensive care in an induced coma, and is in a serious but stable condition, with multiple chest injuries, extensive shoulder injuries, broken left arm and concussion.

All of the above injuries, whilst very serious, are not immediately life threatening.

We would like to thank the BTCC Medical Team, marshals, Croft Circuit staff, Air Ambulance crews and all staff at James Cook Hospital.

Everyone within the BTCC sends their best wishes to all three drivers for a speedy and full recovery.

Thoughts with all concerned, must have been a really bad accident to inflict that much damage. Just reminds us that motorsport is still dangerous even with all the safety features in-car and around the circuit.

Was watching live, awful crash. The horrible feeling of knowing all them cars were unsighted and about to crash. The MG, Ford and Honda took a right battering. Thoughts with the drivers in intensive care.

I read about it but didn't see it - sounds a very nasty crash for that to happen to a touring car.....

hope they all make a full and proper recovery.

I hope the two that are still in hospital make a speedy recovery.

I saw a replay of the accident as part of the ITV4 coverage of the meeting.

Someone went off the track, lost their oil coiler and then ended up back on track leaving a trail oil on top of the rain soaked track. What followed were several accidents with cars at speed loosing control on the oil spill and pilling into the already crashed cars, more like the sort of thing you see on the motorway in fog than you see on a race track.

Well done to the staff at the circuit to get it all sorted and to the mechanics to get most of the cars back to racing condition for today.
