So after a few months i done a few basic things to the car and as a few friends were going to Bedford Autodrome again i thought i would once again take the ZR....

And off i went had a wicked day and showed my mates how it was done and much to there disappointment the ZR with 109k didnt had any HG faults :happy2: All tho the EBC pads were complete rubbish and after a few laps needed a slow lap to cool or i had a rock hard pedal and no brake fiction and even on a cool day the oil temp was way to high causing low pressure....

Next was onto another test day at Bedford Autodrome to test it out as didnt want to go far in-case was a problem, that turnt out to be a wise choice. About 20mins in the engine lost power and was rattling so called it a day and a waste of £160 but there you go. Not 100% sure what happened but the front VVC unit was rattling like mad but after a compression and cylinder leakage test was done no damaged valves to piston ring troubles were found the engine was removed and a Piper 285H solid cam kit was ordered and thats were i am at this point. The plan was to use it with the VVC for a while to give me a bit of time to get the money together to get the full race Piper kit and the steel bottom end, forged pistons etc but there you go. I didnt think it was worth paying £600 odd for a new Rover cam and VVC unit as the Piper kit was £1020 nor did i want to risk using a second hand unit.
So again engine out....

Yeah spent to much on it now tho so gotta keep going as wont get half of it back and I enjoy getting out on track so I get what I want out of it at end of day.

I saw a zs at mallory destroy an m6 and m3 new shape bmw's, now there must have been nearly a 1000hp combined there, and less than 200hp in a well sorted zs destroyed them, the red faced M3 driver hated it, the M6 driver loved it so much he asked to go passenger in it!!!
Track toys aren't cheap, but I'm totally with you in what they give you back in fun, and its always nice to be the 'underdog'!

Yeah that's very true its defo not cheap to be honest I could have done the Evo for more less same price but I wouldn't have been able to compete low level with that and to be honest its just as much fun with the ZR anyway plus good to have something a bit different thing I've only ever been on track with with one MG. Was thinking of going with Mg's on track just to see a few :bike:

For me its not just the monies spent but also the build. To take something back to the chassis then mod and build how you want it, to know every nut and bolt thats gone into it.
And well that moment it fires up for the first time well:

Cool, in which series?
Cool, in which series?
This is the dilemma, I'm out of the MG races unless I go back to standard car, MSV track day trophy could be a go but you need 2 drives or a 40min race with a timed pit shop but mods are free as its done on power to weight ratios. Other option is to get another 160 and just use mine for trackdays
New 3.5kg flywheel came today so i'm almost read to start getting it back together now....

Looks great, almost seems a shame to get it dirty!
Well can soon wash it
you've put a lot of time and effort into the oil cooling system, does it have a baffled sump to keep it in the right place in the engine tho?
No it doesn't at the minute but to be fair even after all the trackdays its done using slicks etc and 119k (on original engine too still) all the bearings, crankshaft were still serviceable so it cant have have any oil problems to be fair. Saying that tho the sump will be coming off after the cams have been bedded in to clean as much of the running oil away so it will be getting one just to be safe
awww,
the 190 trophy cars had baffled sumps and the f cup cars had dry sumps!
Might be worth thinking about?
awww,

Dry sump would be nice i did look into those but i never found any kits for the ZR as you have a brace that bolts onto the bottom of the sump and into the subframe with none of the dry sumps have it still like you say the guys on MGCC dont seem to be having problems so it would must likely be a huge over kill on the car and the pocket :)
yep, dry sump is big bucks.
A simple sump baffle kit is a cheap remedy and functional.

Custom made or off the shelf?
Custom made or off the shelf?
off the shelf sump baffles for the k4 cost about as much as 5ltrs of decent oil.
I had mine tack welded in place at a local engineering outfit, so that was an extra 30quid.
The kv6 on the other hand needs numerous plates welding in place to baffle it up, the kv6 sump is pretty good in the first place.
I was looking at the Elise parts only looks a good bit of kit and fits all K series it says I know the early and late sumps are slightly different think was about £80
Got the brake lines run today....

Coming along very nicely John. You thought about an airbox rather than socks? I've a Bernard Scouse box in both my track BRM and ZS. Reverie do a lovely carbon box too but it's quite a bit more expensive.
Edit, saying that the BS boxes need modifying to fit around the master cylinder, but the Reverie box may well fit without modding as its a little smaller.

Race battery came today really pleased with it and another 8KG off the ZR's weight. Was a bit worried as CCA is only 170amps but turns over no problem :)....

Awesome, big weight saving there.
I need to wire in a kill switch so plan on doing a light weight battery at the same time.
Where are you going to mount it?
Mounting it where the passenger seat once was :yikes:
Had a day off today to try get finished up only a few silly things now but other than getting the battery mounted and sorting the cables out its about ready for mapping, i will do the seat and plump in the bias valve etc later :)
Got the PRT fitted and put in a 90 degree hose to repair the heater pipe, also the uprated master cylinder in but i will need to get a different air filter due to the not much clearance now ....

And it looks like the end is almost in site just need to get the other wheels on so the slicks get a good clean up on the rollers :p go to see it back together tho, also got a quick run up the street and back to make sure it drives :)....

Dont fancy removing that stuff again done it on the Escorts was a killer. Probably should have done it over winter then was cold
There's a big weight saving with the sound deadening though...I've tried both heating and scraping it and just chiselling it off. Chiselling is easier but causes more damage. Heating and scraping is just minging!
Stuffs a nightmare ain't it that why I not bothered  I found was easier to let it get really cold. I will probably do it when it gets caged then can paint the whole floor/cage mounts in one job
best done cold, some c02 extinguishers can really help, it is well worth it tho and beats spending money when some free weight saving can be had.

When I did mine I used dry ice, left it on for 10 minutes with some cleaning alcohol and it came off in lumps, I did the whole car in the time it took to do a 30cm by 30cm section in my boot. Definitely recommend that over any other method.

At the minute its just on Avo springs as the original plan was to run in class D of the MG trophy so coilovers wasn't a option but as that's now out of the question they can be changed all tho in all honesty that set up worked really well. I want to be out again around end of this month/ very start of next. Mapping is pencilled in for the 23rd as dont think I will be quite finished by this Saturday

I didn't notice anything about it to be honest it looked like a lot of HG's for later cars I deal with just just a dull coating on top. When I got the replacement N series gasket it had a sticky surface coating which the first one didn't. I done a bit of research on problems with the N series gasket and there's a lot of people on Lotus forms that have had lots of problems with the gaskets and bad/different length bolts etc. If I do it again at any point I will just use the MLS Payen gasket been using that one for over 10 years in the trade never had any complaints with it

Are those crimping tools expensive? The ones we had at the other place were, they could do 120mm sq cable. I need to redo my cables and switch at some point once the battery has been moved again.

No mate its only a cheap one off ebay. Its a hand held hydraulic one that you change the jaws over for different cable (up to 70mm2) it does a good crimp but its quite bulky but for £25 what you expect  Had it for while tho and its still working touch wood. Like you say to get any good ones be a minimum of £100

fingers crossed dude!
Ok for some reason forgot to update thread, mapping didn't go well the power and torque just keep dropping off so was obvious something was wrong. We did what we could in the time we had with the tools we had but to no luck. The mappers thought there to be a problem with either the cams being incorrect or the timing being out. So anyway after a week depression at the reasons i was close to getting rid of the car and being done with it but after a break away i looked into the problem. First rechecked compressions all reading ok @ 1-200psi 2-200psi 3-210psi 4-220psi. checked ecu setting, fuel pressure, throttle bodies etc etc everything was fine so onto cam timings. I didnt do this myself when built engine as i didnt have the correct tools/gauges etc to set up the verniers so i had a well known person (who im not going to name) do the job for me. After a few days waiting for the digital dial gauge etc to turn i could get on with making the brackets etc to get the job done. Using the "lift at DTC" method i carried out the job, below are the results and the settings....
Cam settings first....
Piper's setting Intake cam - 2.24mm DVA Powers setting for exhaust cam - 2.79mm
Piper's setting exhaust cam - 1.98mm DVA Powers setting for exhaust cam -2.41mm
And here are my findings....
Intake cam....

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk4/JohnLucy/temporary_zpszfarnhvw.jpg (http://s276.photobucket.com/user/JohnLucy/media/temporary_zpszfarnhvw.jpg.html)
So as you can see the exhaust is way out, im happy i had found the most likely course of the fault but not happy about being £200 down for the cost of 1 hours rolling road and mappers time.
Got it all reset now and run it up, the engine note is completely different now and it revs up a lot faster so be back to the rollers asap....

Fair play, good on you for sticking at it. Just makes it all that much more rewarding when it is finally right.
Nowhere near the end of the world. When I had my ZS on the RR after fitting the ITB's the head gasket went. Find it, went back and is better than ever, just stick with it and you'll be rewarded in the end.
I'd certainly complain to whoever timed the cams first though!
Thanks guys, like you say not end of world just such a kick in the balls

The reasons you posted for the issues found is why I find it hard to trust someone hence why I do all my own rebuilds and setting up, there's only one person to blame if it is incorrect. Being a time-served toolmaker by trade makes it easier as tend to have the tools, even after all these years away from a workshop! I know the feeling when things go against you and you feel like shoite, always pays to walk away, take a break and revisit when the minds refreshed. Pleased you go it it sorted and no doubt feel pretty damn good with yourself too!

Glad you appear to have got to the bottom of the problem.
I've had loads of setbacks with the car here, and I've come close to torching it on more than one occasion, I am not fortunate enough to be able to do the work myself so I am at the mercy of third parties....
For me I hope the delays and setbacks will all be worth it in the end - so keep going, and keep up the good work :)

Got the head lights sorted today, they were in such poor condition were almost completely yellow, since I wasn't planning on using it on road again I painted the lights black but after a rethink I would quite like to attend a few shows next year so thought I would try clean them up. First of used thinners' to remove paint, then a 800-1200 wet flat, cut back with mid then fine compound and a polish all done using the mop. While there I also opened them and painted the black plastic to match wheels etc....

Ok guys we are all mapped up and ready for track again. Thank God everyone went great at Emerald and I had a really enjoyable day there all tho wasn't nice driving there on the base map car drove horrible on road and was stuck in traffic on black cat roundabout at the A1 at 7am couldn't believe it. Anyway drive home was great and all smiles so was all worth the money, travel and early start. Came away with 2 maps which are switched in the car....
1. Track map- 7500rpm, full throttle gear change, over run enrichment etc 181bhp
2. Road map- toned down power, 7000rpm, over run fueling and flat shift off
So not quite at my 190bhp in my head figure yet but the person doing the mapping thinks with the Janspeed manifold and de-cat and timing set to 120-100thou on the cams should be about there but for now I'm happy and can honestly say the car feels very quick and I've had some fast cars in my Time. Anyway here's a video on the dyno and will get some "on the road videos done tomoz...

how does the oil control compare to the ones with the viton flaps in?
It the same basic shape but it doesn't have the area front and rear where the flaps on the flap version does to allow as much oil though by the looks. I did look at that one but I'm always a bit worried about buying from ebay as the quality is sometimes questionable. Cant imagine DVA would sell a inferior part tho but might order another one to compare
Went for a change on the sump baffle changed over to the viton flap version on the right....

how do they compare on cost, quality & functionality/purpose?
Cost wise about £15 more for the flap version, as for quality the alloy thickness etc is 100% the same as is the main shape. Main reason I changed is because the one on the right will help to stop oil surge under braking as it as the 2 flaps and plate at the front which the original one doesn't so under hard braking all the oil could still go to the front of the sump. Only way could really compare tho is to data log oil pressure on track with both types
Cost wise about £15 more for the flap version,
considering the cost of those flaps, that seems like really good value for money?
It must be better for oil returning to the centre on exit from a corner also?

Well I guess for £65 its cheaper than the engine oil I use (millers 5w40NT) and considering what I spend on engine id like to give it its best change dont want to be doing anything to though 2017 I hope. Dave at DVA said with his one you may need to cut extra grooves into it if you needed more oil flow but in all honesty without logging how would you know but with the flap version that should be sorted. Apparently this type is what MG used on the 190 spec cars originally but I cant confirm that :)
I think its alternative for the 190 cars as the original setup is no longer available, the original 190 version was more of a box but I remember Paul Luti saying that a bit was prone to come away/break off and it was over £250+vat when it was available.
I think the type you have was made as an alternative replacement for new 190 engine builds as it created a box in a similar way to the old style, controlling oil under braking and lat G (typically 1.25 mean ave) whereas accelerative G would be less than half that in 2nd gear and declining through the cogs.

Yeah the people who made it said they based it on the original version which wasn't available any more and was crazy expensive but said they sell a lot to the MG Trophy boys and no one had any problems but I would think after a while of being in oil the flaps may start to expand. To be fair tho my ZR had 109k, was on original engine and I done 2 years of trackdays with slicks and big brakes all the bearings, crack, cams etc were all in really good condition when I rebuilt it so cant had any oil surge
Well only few days left till trackday and everything turning into made rush again, got sump off at weekend to fit the baffle only to find my sump was different to the normal k series so been on a mad hunt to find another sump.....

Thanks only got Avo lowering springs at minute but hopefully coilovers be stored over Xmas. All the videos apart from the rearview lap was on road tyres, went on to slicks after lunch but track was a bit quite as went out late so wasn't much to over take so didn't bother putting those videos up as nothing much to see. Must say I was happy with it all tho just not having any problems after everything was a good result
Janspeed manifold and de-cat came today. Hopefully will get it test fitted at weekend and if the fitment is ok will get it heat wrapped. Must say tho the quality seemed a lot better on the Piper and Elise parts manifold, welds aren't that great and thought the pipes would be bigger than they are but see want happens when back on rollers at Emerald.

What has happened to Janspeed? Does make you wonder if they actually make them. Most likely farmed out to sub standard fabricators. Probably crap gas flow as well.
Must say I'm not completely happy with it but I'm gonna try it but as I said compared to the EP and Piper ones for the Elise/Exige it looks crap all tho it is half the price. Janspeed said it was made to order and took 2 weeks and 2 days to come. I have heard though the trade that Janspeed mostly make after market exhausts now but if that's true I wouldn't know

As much as I expect you're keen to get it fitted and see what it's like, I'd warn against fitting them if you're not 100% happy. No doubt they cost you a few quid and their response after you've fitted them and you're not happy won't be helpful.
I'd advise strongly that if you're not happy already, to at least make contact with them expressing your concerns. I'd be asking them how they want to progress. If they say fit and we'll see what the results are - fair enough. After you fit them, you'll be stuck.
If you compare how they look to the way the recently polished up second hand ones that are going to get fitted by Big-Jay they don't seem to be anywhere near the same standard. I appreciate you didn't buy them for looks, but surely it gives an indicator of the quality. Post 19

Just make sure your 100% on your flags mate as sure you are anyway, the ones that I was having to think about where things like when do you hand your licence in for signing at your first race meeting and things like that. Id say watch that bit of the dvd a good few times as was few questions about things like that others were fairly straight forward like what to do if your helmet is cracked, what should you do if you crash and car wont move, where to stop if your car can move slowly (coloured barrier) what should you do if throttle sticks wide open (hit the kill switch and declutch)

Finally got the Janspeed on, not rapped it yet just wanted to check fitted which is mm perfect all tho the lambda probe is completely in a different place. Thanks for the tips, just doing some swatting up for the big day tomorrow.
Looking good with the decat but I'm going to have to go the opposite way with mine, regs say they have to have a cat fitted, the other issue I had was at the last track day I pulled 111 db on the noise test which is obviously over the 105 limit. Luckily they let me run anyway but im hoping a 100 cell cat will bring it down a bit and keep me legal on both counts.
Hope all goes well mate cant see there being a problem tho if I can do it anyone can :) let me know how you find it is it tomoz your doing it? What series you going for?

For anybody else reading it really isn't too bad as long as you know the flags. Some of the questions were hilarious, I remember one which was something along the lines of "When should you present your licence?" Is it... A. To show off to your girlfriend. etc etc.
Anyway, I passed so another step closer to holding everybody up in one of the series, exactly which one I haven't decided. I need to look into entry fees and race dates and make a decision. At present I'm torn between Peter Best and Cockshoot.
What about you?

Top job mate well done there is some funny questions isn't there, as you say other than flags common sense should get you though really I'm sure I had that question about license to. I think I will be running in 750's hot hatch series. Cant believe you got to use a ZS mine was a 308GTI
Thanks :)
For anybody else reading it really isn't too bad as long as you know the flags. Some of the questions were hilarious, I remember one which was something along the lines of "When should you present your licence?" Is it... A. To show off to your girlfriend. etc etc.

Cams, non standard ratio's or a diff will put you out of class B of the Peter Best and into class 'C'
The V6 is a class 'C' only car in the Cockshoot.
Race fees and dates are very similar for both.
There are more ZS's in the cockshoot, basically all the ZS guys bar Peter Burchill run in the Cockshoot.
Cockshoot Class C can run slicks and full race wets, you could run road tyres also.
Peter Best is road tyres only.
The new gen road tyres are fast, not much slower than a slick.
New Gen wets, such as rainsport 3 are fast in the wet.
Whilst there are gains in full race tyres, they are not huge amounts faster like yesteryear or like some trackday heroes think they are.
Brand new race tyres are more money than road tyres, but you can pick up used slicks for very little money and race wets, whilst rare are not much used.
I looked seriously at the Peter Best for 2017, only to be told by hierarchy that there will be such little interest and attendees in class C that its not worth bothering with!!!
The ZS struggles in parity against the ZR190 at most circuits (this is not a held belief in the Peter Best, but TSL timing evidence supports what I say) but at least you will be racing against other ZS's in the cockshoot.

Would be a bit unfair to expect the ZS's to be faster than the ZR190's tho wouldn't it they are to be fair running a full race engine
true, yet some think the zs's are running 230bhp or thereabouts, and as we all know, circuit racing is all about the numbers!!!!!!

What's there engine spec?
270 cams, intake is free but standard throttle body must be retained!!!

I've not really looked into that, whats made you lean that way rather than the MG champs? The 308 uses the 1.6 mini turbo engine doesn't it?

Hmm, pros and cons for each really. How many ZS's are out this season do we think in the Cockshoot? Be interesting to hear why Peter went over to Peter Best.

That explains your facebook post then!
Mainly because my engine spec now doesn't fit in and nor does my brake kit
Finally got my B&G adjustable top mounts today just need to make my mind up on the coilovers now and get them ordered. Been looking into KW Clubsports but not sure if there going to be a over kill both in terms of price and spec....

Good pics. Did it go well compared to others on track?
Nearly bought a 208 Gti when I got the ST Fiesta. Think it would have suited me more - quick but not quite as rock hard suspension as the ST. Fun little car.

Went ok thanks was very slippery tho in morning lots of red/yellow flags with people going off. In all fairness wasn't that many "normal" cars there was a lot of people testing I thought as was lots of Clio cups, mini cup cars and ginetta's there. Need to get a set of good tyres of when its damp or cold really too
My race licence came today looking at getting the ZR on some test days soon....
