To simplify it a bit...
Crank in the safe position
Rear pulley timing marks facing each other (pulleys are keyed to cams)
Then should be safe to fit the front belt (floating cam sprockets)

Only thing to note that the rear cams can be out even if the front crank mark aligns , you'd need to crank another 180 degrees to align them. Best take some pictures after you've done and post them here..

Nothing worse than cranking it afterwards to find you've just mashed your pistons with the valves again . Mind I'm surprised there's no damage to the pistons after mashing the last time
Apparently I've been told the valves are quite britle so there more likely to bend than damage be done to the Pistons and that the Pistons on these kv6 are very strong but to be honist I surpose you never no till its together

I've also been told because it's been charged the timing has to be retarded, what's this mean?

if its retarted i guess its timed for more top end power, opposite of advanced. the pulleys would be out of line with one another a tooth or so. the piper cams have vernier pulleys to make it easier to advance or retard timing. when i had the belts done on my first 180 they were out by a tooth and all the power was a the top of the rev range. was like two different cars.
